Can I use a Sigma 70-300 4-5.6 DL on my 600D (T3i)

A EF mount Sigma 70-300 4-5.6 DL

This lens is pretty old, and I am curious if it would work on my 600D.

Some people say it doesn't work with Digital SLRs, but only film SLRs.

But then I found this video: https://youtu.be/gO_vkUwJkfI

This guy is using the Sigma 70-300 DL on a 700D, and everything seems to be working fine, including the AF motor and changing the aperture value.

I can't understand the language the guy is speaking in the video though, so don't know what's exactly going on, but I could see the AF motor moving and him changing the aperture value.

I don't know if it is perfectly compatible with my 600D...

No. The demonstration in the video is misleading (may or may not be on purpose). Yes, it will AF and it'll appear that you can select the aperture. But the lens will work only at wide open aperture. This is shown in the video, a pic at 70mm f/4, 135mm at f/4.5 and 300mm at f/5.6. A-OK. But if you try to shoot with the aperture stopped down it will fail and give ERR code.

For a cheap xx-300mm zoom, I would recommend the Canon EF 100-300mm f/4-5.6 USM. This is what I have and was recommended .

Ah.

So, I talked with a person who had tested this lens on a 300D, and as you mentioned he told me that it gave errors when changing the aperture, but the AF didn't work at all, opposite to the video.

Perhaps the 300D and the 600D~700D has different AF systems?

i tried using a third party used zoom lens on my T3i and all i got was occasional errors.  after calling the dealer they told me that older third party lens don't work as good as canon lens on my T3i, so i sent it back.

wish i knew why these problems exist, but they did for me.

I have the APO version of this lens, I thought there was something wrong with aperture when used on a Digital SLR but after reading this it must be incompatible with the digital models and is only meant for 35mm film SLRs.
