New RP and a pic
1

I love the way this camera feels in my hands! But I have to say I ordered it at the worst time, we've had rain rain and more rain. When it hasn't rained it's been really cloudy. Today I snuck out on the deck and took a few shots. I think I should be able to get more sharpness? But maybe not at this setting.

If I'm reading my focus plugin right, I have the focus on the grackle. I don't normally shoot at high ISOs though.

Would love to know your thoughts for improvement.

(I'm also minus a contact in my shooting eye at the moment so it doesn't help that I can't really see what the camera is right now)

Looks pretty sharp on my monitor. I'm not that familiar with the RP but, many cameras have a wheel close the EVF where you can adjust the dioptic viewfinder for your eyesight?

Have fun with your new camera!

Thanks - it does! My eyes are pretty bad without the contacts so I've got that dialed all the way and it's not quite right. With my contact in, it's really sharp!

Hi Diane!

Congratulations!  While the weather is bad you have time to learn all the controls of the RP and take pics of the cat/dog/goldfish. I recommend Nina Bailey‘s Understanding the RP. it is much better than the Canon manual and cheap.

Enjoy!

Thanks! I hadn't found that book and it is a bit less than the other one I had found. Light reading for the weekend right?

LOL I bet you the rain will stop way before you have mastered all the tricks in that book! It is a gem. Glad you finally decided on the RP. You will not regret it!

I keep hoping, but it's been a REALLY dark winter (and spring so far)

Downloaded the book so I will get some reading in this weekend, thanks again

Per the image's EXIF data you were using the RF 100-400mm at only 281mm.

Need to zoom in so the bird(s) image covers a larger area of the sensor, i.e., bird(s) is/ are comprised of more of the sensor's pixels.

Of your RP's 6240x4160 sensor's pixels, the one bird fits within only a very small 800x558 area of the sensor.

Below a simple example of a possible framing for pic with all birds:

Image was cropped, and downsized to 2000 pixels width/ sharpened.

... I don't normally shoot at high ISOs though ...

Due to the RF 100-400mm f/5.6-8 max apertures, using faster shutter speeds will require higher ISO's. Which with OOC JPG's will generally result degradation of the smaller (feather) details resolution due to higher ISO image noise.

3200 ISO with the RP's FF sensor should not be too much of an issue, as with your SX50 .

With small subjects (i.e., birds) just have the subject fill the frame as much as possible.

Another big help to improve IQ is to shoot RAW and use a RAW app that has good lens profiles and noise reduction.

Cheers,
Jon

Re: New RP and a pic

Jon_T, I love when you find my threads As always, great image enhancement.

I am managing to underexpose all my pix at the moment so I have to figure out why I'm doing that when I didn't seem to do it with the SX50.

Is Canon's DPP4 good enough? I just downloaded it but haven't done anything with it. I don't think LR6 will see RAW from this camera.

It's supposed to be sunny tomorrow so I plan on spending some time outside with the camera!

DPP4 is more than enough to get you started. Plus, it's free!

Looks sharp but the noise reduction looks heavy-handed, which lessens the details.

Do you mean the NR setting in the camera?  I Don’t think I had it on, but it’s possible. I actually reset the camera the night before last

Thanks; you're welcome

... I am managing to underexpose all my pix at the moment so I have to figure out why I'm doing that when I didn't seem to do it with the SX50. ...

Different cameras, just need to learn how your RP metering system works with different lighting conditions; Grackle/ foreground underexposed a little due the brighter background areas. May check in your RP Menu settings that the "Expo. simulation" is enabled.

... Is Canon's DPP4 good enough? I just downloaded it but haven't done anything with it. I don't think LR6 will see RAW from this camera. ...

Have not used DPP because I use other camera brands, and use non-Canon lenses on my Canon DSLR's, Note that DPP only has lens profiles for Canon Lenses.

Prior to downloading/ installing DPP 4: verify your computer (CPU type/speed, RAM, Graphics Card, available Hard disk , etc.) meets/ exceeds the DDP 4 "Recommended System Requirements".

Also note your SX50HS images may appear sharper while viewing images due to the greater DOF the smaller 1/2.3" sensor provides than the FF sensor.

Buy your "... I think I should be able to get more sharpness! ...", in my previous reply I was assuming you were mainly speaking of the sharpness of the Grackle feathers which IMO softness is mainly due to the small pixel surface area/ small amount pixels—especially when 100% pixel viewing:

100% crop from your image

Have fun with your new RP!

Have you bought any other lenses than the RF100-400mm?

If not just a FYI Canon USA Refurbished Lenses have the refurbished RF 24-150mm f/4-7.1 IS STM for $249.00 HERE.

The 100% Pixie Pixel Peepers love to criticize this lens, but for the $249.00 it makes for a good small/ lightweight general purpose lens; e.g., reviews:
CameraLabs, PhotographyBlog; the-digital-picture.com, etc.

Cheers,

Very odd. experiment with the different metering systems (Nina's book p. 174).

I found there are lots of things to learn (and remember) after the EOS 5D. I find Fv mode works best for me, but you have to get used to it. The menu contents change with the shooting mode: that can trip you up!

I dont find it as good as PhotoLab 5 Elite, but if you want that, I advise you to wait until it goes on sale.

It actually is! I went through a video last week and made a bunch of changes, but then reset it as some of the drove me crazy (many were battery saving changes but I felt hampered by the camera dimming constantly). So I'm starting over again.

It actually runs well on my old machine I

I am noticing there is less of a focus point area with the RP and I'm guessing that's why. When pixel peeping I can see the RP is much sharper though, especially on fixed objects.

Buy your "... I think I should be able to get more sharpness! ...", in my previous reply I was assuming you were mainly speaking of the sharpness of the Grackle feathers which IMO softness is mainly due to the small pixel surface area/ small amount pixels—especially when 100% pixel viewing:

That IS what I meant about the sharpness.

I am... I think hah! Going from the SD950 to the SX50 was a huge leap and I think I expected that same WOW with this one. I think it is there, I just have to work a little harder for it. And I did want a challenge

I got the 24-105 kit lens with the camera but have not even unwrapped it yet. I read a thread on the one you linked and that sounds pretty nice, I've bookmarked it.

It's nowhere near as warm as they said it would be today, but I did sit outside for a bit and got a few more pix, SOOC. I switched back to TV for awhile. I think I need more practice for FV.

Definitely a "me" issue. I went back to TV and what I took today was much better.

I'm coming from the SX50 so this is a huge change. And I haven't touched my old 80s 35mm since 2007 or so. I've forgotten a LOT.

I think I have some of their LR filters, but unfortunately their system requirements are above my OS. Unless they still sell older versions, worth looking into. Thanks!

I use DxO photo lab 4 elite (haven't upgraded to 5)  The default settings give excellent results with my EOS R. You can always tweak colour, lighting and sharpness to your own taste. I think it's probably easier to use than Lightroom or DPP. The thing that's great about photo lab is you can just put your raw files through and get great results straightaway.

Just a FYI, with smaller subjects (birds, etc.) may need to use Spot AF.

In your image the chains behind the birds are sharper than the birds, especilly with the bird on the left.

Overall nice captures.

with the 2nd squirrel pic IMO would had been better if used a longer focal length.

Jon

Funny you should say that, I was sitting with a chickadee for a bit and that's what I did. I know this camera is not as good with catching birds as they hop around (compared to the R5/R6) but I can see the focus changing as the bird hops around in the brush and this is something the SX50 couldn't do.

Overall nice captures.

I think I was panning with him so I zoomed out to make it easier on me.

So that chickadee..... Here's the pic of him that I am pretty happy with.

Then I remembered I grabbed the SX50 after a few minutes and took 2 shots. One came out, though I did not get a face shot.

(this should be a little more than 400, I was sitting in the same place)
