S22 (basic model) which of the 3 cameras can save in RAW?
Mar 30, 2022
As is usual with consumer products, online reviews are hype and hype and little of any critical details
I have an S10E and since the S5 have always shot in RAW, then via Lightroom CS6, and got good results (for a phone).
The S10E can also save in plain standard DNG which Lightroom reads fine.
I found some Samsung phone cameras can save in RAW and some (on the same phone) cannot.
Also is anyone able to report whether the S22 RAW is standard DNG? One can usually find a converter (I already have to for CR2, for a G7X camera) but it is an extra step.
Somebody I know has the S22 Ultra which in good light and under good conditions seems to be as good as the G7X, which I find astonishing! Certainly in low contrast situations. But this is a big phone, hence I am looking at the S22.
I don't mind what camera app I have to get although I tend to find that 3rd party camera apps don't do anything tangible than the factory app - because the app is no more than just a "control panel" for the camera API. It can give a different look and feel, and better config, etc, but it has no access to the image data itself! It is possible for an app to access the data after the OS has saved it to a file, but it can't do much with it because it is just a jpeg or dng by then. This is what one android camera app coder told me. And unless the phone is rooted, the quick access key(s) always start just the factory app anyway.
Many thanks in advance for any feedback. If I do get the S22, I will post some comparisons with the G7X.
