Can lens damage camera mount when hanging the camera with strap?

I have the EOS 850D and an EF 70-200mm 2.8 IS I.

Is the camera body strong enough to support the weight of the 1.5kg lens when hanging the camera+lens with the default neck strap? It feels kind of flimsy.

Is there a way to mount a strap to the lens itself?

IMHO - Yes buy the strap and mount the lens so you don't drop it.

I have an 850D and a Canon 70-300 IS zoom. Not as good as your lens, but probably about as heavy. I've used that lens on an 850D and a 350D for more than a decade with zero damage. I don't think there would be any problems unless you're banging the kit around pretty badly. However, I did buy a stretchy / wide / padded Op/Tech strap that made the whole thing feel much lighter. Similar to this: https://www.optechusa.com/pro-strap.html I actually bought a second Op/Tech strap for the shoulder-style camera case I had at the time!

If you want to mount a strap directly to the lens, I can't recall seeing anything that would do that. Maybe a lens collar with some kind of strap loop or something screwed on...? But if it was me, I'd not worry about it.

No it is not strong enough.  With a large and heavy lens like the 70-200mm, the lens is supporting the camera body, instead of the reverse.

It feels kind of flimsy.

Doesn't the lens have a tripod foot?  You should be able to purchase a strap that connects to the tripod threads of the foot.

A good rule of thumb is that if the manufacturer provides a tripod mount or strap mounting lugs on the lens, you probably ought to hang the combination from the lens. Having said this, I see dozens of press and sports photographers carrying a DSLR or mirrorless body with a 70-400 f2.8 or 100-400 or 100-500 lens with a strap mounted on the lugs on the camera body. I have no idea if they ever run into issues with this, or if they do, if they have to pay for it since many press and sports pros use cameras and lenses from a corporate pool.  As for me, I'm not a pro and don't get free use of my gear, so I carry my combination with a strap attached to the lens mount (or sometimes with one end attached to the camera and the other end to the lens depending on the strap I am using).

I have a Canon EOS 600d and a canon 100-300mm zoom.

I recently discovered that when I used the camera with the battery grip, the 100-300mm telephoto didn't drag down so much.

I only use a cheap second-hand Neewer version of the battery grip,

Hello...

I belong to Flickr Pro.... and smugmug - they each sent me a free neck strap.

Never had an issue with the camera strap and 70-200 but I avoid letting the camera and strap hanging loose at the end of the strap. Also, if you want to use a tripod, it must be attached to the lens, not to the camera.

Regards,
There is always something to shoot/snap, you just have to know how to do it and have the right gear.

Here is my set up that I just put together a couple days ago.

I just upgraded to the Canon 70-200 2.8 L III IS from my previous f4 version. This lens is considerably heavier than what I am accustomed to using.

I shoot motorsports every weekend on both Fri & Sat at 2 different tracks and being I am in my mid 60's, I am concerned that carrying that heavy of a lens around my neck for hours would become an issue. A shoulder type strap seemed like a much better idea.

I went with a Black Rapid shoulder strap that is attached to the lens collar that came with my lens. I have thoughts about trying out a monopod (again for the fatigue factor) and wanted a quick release ARCA style mount attached to the foot of the lens collar. This ARCA style mount from Fusion Gear has a really beefy flip out ring to attach the Black Rapid strap, and If I decide to use a monopod, I can undo the strap and slide the plate into the monopod easily. The smaller strap is a safety strap clipped on to the ring, just in case the quick release plate became unscrewed somehow. I have no fear the camera can hit the ground.

I now have the strap on my left shoulder with the camera hanging horizontally on my right hip with the lens pointing behind me. Pretty easy to grab it and shoot. In addition, it also allows me to keep my second camera with a wide angle lens around my neck at the same time if needed.

Alternatively, I you don't care about having a quick release plate, you could just attach a strap directly to the lens collar foot.
