Unbeatable Performance - True Film Camera Replacement
5

Years ago having a Digital camera that could truly replace the best Canon “Film” cameras was a fantasy.  Today, 2022, Canon has totally replaced even the Hasselblad 2.25”x2.25” based mid-sized $25k cameras, PLUS unmatched performance features like 15 levels of EV, contrast capability, HDR, incredible autofocus capabilities, true FF 35mm format, with a 45,000,000 dual Focus Pixels… the EV Viewfinder, displays to your eye looking into the viewfinder shows real-time images cycling at 120fps, an over 5,000,000 pixel UHDR display, recall your 65” flatscreen that displays 1080P is showing you 2.1MP, this viewfinder if displaying more than 2 times the number of pixels refreshing at 120fps or 60fps, user selectable, suggestion: select 120fps.  The camera “back-screen” is also super HDTV display, touch screen capable to select AUTO Focus/Exposure…

I’m a Canon guy, dating back when the Media “Required” THE USE OF Canon 40mm f2.8 IS Lenses, 25 years ago. Today the other camera Brands like Nikon and SONY, have caught up to Canon.  BUT being a “canon-guy” for dating back to the 6MP Canon DCS-560, a joint venture with KODAK = Canon used its 1N camera body, and KODAK designed and engineered the IMAGER circa 1985, price-Tag of $25,000 for a 6MP digital, extra batteries cost $1,250/each, you need 4 = $30,000 for the kit.

For a Canon Guy, the Canon EOS R5 is the BOSS, I LOVE IT !!

Yep! I'm also a "Canon guy." Have been since the mid-80s. I did my share of grumbling along the way, but I really love using my R5s. A lot of technical stuff for an old guy to learn and keep up with, but the photo possibilities are crazy good.

I too began my career with Canon and a D30. Then onto a 1D. I only left when early in the 2000s Nikon stole their crown. I was there until December of 2020 and I dove back into a R5 and RF L glass. I keep seeing all the offerings from other companies including Nikon as they move forward. But for me for shear image quality and ergo's the R5 has yet to be beat (the backorder status for many R5's is evidence of it's popularity). While I'm waiting to see what the R1 will bring to the table, unless it's leagues beyond the R5 I won't make a change. So far the R5 is doing all I ask it to in spades.

Name the gear and I've probably owned it and used it.

i'm by no means a "canon guy" and i wasn't yet born in the 80s, and i must agree the r5 is a super impressive camera that was worth the switch to mirrorless and even the switch to canon...

BUT calling this a "film replacement" because of all the state-of-the-art goodies you mentioned... well, it's a bit like saying: "i was born in the stone-age, and haven't found a worthy replacement to etching on stone walls until the ipad pro m1 came out... now i'm good to go!"

come on man!

I don't have an R5 though I do have an R that I love, but that too is leagues beyond what your typical film camera offers technically.

That being said, nothing replaces film in my eyes. I've recently been enjoying shooting film on my AE-1. Sometimes I want that imperfect unique film look, and other times I want the razor sharp cleanliness and malleability that modern digital sensors provide.

If you like shooting video, a lot of those older FD lenses on an RF mount are surprisingly good. You should try it!
