Thoughts on the x-s10 and 16-55mm

Hello,

I planning to replace my old x-e2, and the x-s10 seems to be a nice update. But I am concerned about basically two issues, the viewfinder and the grip.

I saw some comments on how small the x-s10 viewfinder is. But the specs look quite similar to the x-e2 and I am quite comfortable with its viewfinder. Should I expect a downgrade on the viewfinder size and quality?

Regarding the grip, do you think there is enough room for the fingers when using the 16-55mm. I really love this lens and planning to sacrifice it for a new camera body. Do you have any experience with this combo? Is there enough room left for the fingers?

I appreciate all comments and insights!

Cheers

If you don't use glasses then the viewfinder is completely fine, and if you use them, then most probably it is still usable.

When you have small-mid sized hands, the 16-55mm will fit wonderfully to the X-S10, when you have larger hands the knuckles may go against the lens, but should still be usable.

I wear glasses, and wear size XXL gloves, and use the 16-55 on the S-X10.  No issues for me.  Great little camera IMO.  Same sensor and processor as my X-T4 in a smaller package.

Nice to hear that! I also use glasses and can use even the most terrible evf's, so X-S10 is totally fine, but not all glasses are made equal, and I've heard some people complain about the eye relief distance, so I just had to say it.

While i wear my glasses almost against the eyeball, there are people that wear them closer to the tip of the nose, in which case 17.5mm might not be enough eye relief.

I suppose nose relief matters.  I have a very shallow nose, so maybe that explains why I generally don't have issues.  Those with real noses might have a different experience.  😁

Atleast on the X-T4, XPro3 and X-S10 the screen folds inwards, so you can smush your nose right against the camera with no problem, on the X-T3 my nose always activated some weird functions and messed with AF point.

The viewfinder shouldn't be an issue. It's not as big as those on the X-T3 or X-T4 but it's very clear. I am quite nearsighted and can still use it comfortably with my glasses. There is a setting that you can configure to use large icons in the display. I have set up the camera to use the large icons in the viewfinder and the normal ones on the LCD. Generally, I prefer to use the viewfinder outside and the LCD inside.

Re: Thoughts on the x-s10 and 16-55mm

I personally can't use my glasses with the X-S10's viewfinder, but luckily my vision is "good enough" that I can take them off (or simply go without) when I'm out taking pictures.

I don't have the 16-55, so I can't comment too much on the size there, but I have relatively large hands/fingers and have lots of room to spare with the (admittedly, much, much smaller) 15-45 and 50-230. It's also extremely comfortable in the hand in general.

Re: Thoughts on the x-s10 and 16-55mm

I have both the xS10 and the 16-55 and find no problem with operating the lens although my hands are not unduly large. However the bigger question for me is that of adding a really heavy lens to a relatively tiny camera and I find the combination rather unbalanced, so I stick to using the 16-55 with the larger and heavier XT3 but keep my 18-55 for use on the xs10.  If I need wider I have a 10-24 which pairs well with the xs10

Re: Thoughts on the x-s10 and 16-55mm

I appreciate all your comments. Overall, I think I won't have problems with this combo, except for the nose issue! I really like the position of the viewfinder in the x-e2, but I think I will just have to get used to that!

Thanks again for all your answer!
