Eos M6 II maybe right for me?
1

Looking for some feedback. Started my journey with t3i to a 70D to now an entire system of Sony with the A7R2 and handful of G and GM lenses currently. Mid way, purchased an EOS M for my wife and got addicted to how easy it was to pocket it everywhere with the 22mm lens.

Now that Im starting to travel for business again, my entire kit of Sony is too much to take and often time is too much to even bring with two lenses (24-105 f4 and 35 f1.4 typically ). Im looking back to how pocketable the eos M is and keeps pushing me back to wanting to use it. Specifically with the 22mm lens.

so whats stopping me on the eos m1? The autofocus and resolution of the M is pretty rough and doesnt compare at all to my A7R2. I do crop a lot! So looking at whats out, the M6II and Sonys ZV-E10 fits the bill. I also do the occasional vlogs.

since i cant seem to find a zv-e10 anywhere and i have the 22mm ef-m (along with the 18-55 ef-m, ef to efm adapter and a few ef lenses still) im tempted to get the m6 II. The megapixel and size of the camera are all very tempting. Not sure i like the screen flip. Always loved the 70D screen flip and hate my A7R2s tilt. Also, the 4k definitely doesnt look as strong as the zv-e10, and not even sure if it would be a step up on my a7R2.

lastly, this is a nice to have. I hope theyll come out with a m6-3, but will it be better? (For me its just the tilt screen and video sharpness) all the other boxes seem checked. Tho not sure on battery life. The eos m50ii is a non starter as its bigger with the EVF and no dual pixel AF in 4k.

do i…gas out and get the m6ii for travel? If so, it would be the 22mm for sure but do i pair it with my 18-55kit or is there a ~85mm f2ish equivalent thats some what compact? I think the main hesitancy is ive been out of the loop on the M line: is a next gen around the corner, if not, am i going to be disappointed compared to my a7r2 aside from size?

need some sounding boards. Thanks!

IMHO - I think the EOS M6II would be a very nice digital for yourself - I have the 'M' camera and many lenses that can fit on it.

4k from the M6 II is less detailed than what you can get from the ZV-E10, but the ZV-E10 has noticeably worse rolling shutter.  If you will be doing a lot of panning, or filming action, the M6 II would be better.  For static scenes, the ZV-E10 would be better.

The Sigma 56mm f/1.4 in Canon EF-M mount is by far the best option for roughly 85mm equivalent

I think the main hesitancy is ive been out of the loop on the M line: is a next gen around the corner, if not, am i going to be disappointed compared to my a7r2 aside from size?

At this point, it is unclear if there will be any more new M cameras, ever.  Canon is "all-in" on their full frame RF mount and has mostly ignored the M system for the past few years.  Some believe the M system will see some attention once the RF lineup is more fully fleshed out, while others believe that the M system is being slowly phased out.  Regardless of any future plans, RF lenses can not be adapted to M bodies, and EF-M lenses can not be adapted to R bodies.

Maybe pick up a low cost, used M6 (original, not the Mark II version) to get significantly better AF than the original M, and then wait a few months to see where Canon and Sony go with their crop systems once the pandemic parts shortages clear.

I’ve owned a T4i and 70D (and 7D2), but not a Sony ILC.  The M6ii’s performance is stellar compared to any of those DSLRs.

Use Spot AF with Servo and you’ll be able to shoot anything.  Having all that goodness packed into such a compact body is wonderful, and with a zoom such as the 18-150 it makes a super travel kit.  Or go even smaller with the little 15-45 and/or 22!  In fact the 22 fits right in the side pocket of most little hip holster cases (with a spare battery in the other pocket).

As far as the tilting screen goes, it’s certainly personal preference, and I adore the M6ii’s ultra-quick (to adjust) LCD.  I wouldn’t have it any other way.  If there’s to be an M6iii, it may only be a “firmware/feature upgrade,” but I’ll be pre-ordering mine.

If you’d like to see what the M6ii is capable of, there’s a thread with a lot of good information here…

I would buy other lenses for the Sony camera.

The 22mm has so much vignetting wide open it's almost an f/4.0 full frame equivalent lens. I would pick up a zeiss 35mm f/2.8 and a 28-60mm kitlens. There's also a Samyang 35mm f/2.8.  IBIS does the rest.

Thanks for all the feedback. Ended up getting a refurbished M6 II from canon. Should be here soon. Excited to use it.

Pocketability is definitely the key here. I can squeeze the M1 with a 22 into my jeans pocket, thisll maybe be a bit bigger but looks pretty easy for some of my casual wear.

Thanks all!
