SDQ or SDQ-H Users or Issues

Greetings Sigma users

Long story short, I was doing a magazine shoot at high altitude 6000-7000 ft this last week. I decided to use the SDQ and the FP, the FP worked fine no issues, but the SDQ would go into the sleep mode between shoots, and when I pushed the shutter release button to wake the Q up it went to SD logo black screen on the LCD and that's it. I kept having to turn the SDQ on and off to get it to work.

Ok, now the weather, it was cold, snowy and windy, temperature was 38 degrees F with a 15 mph wind or more, so about 10 degrees F. The camera and lens had snow on them, but here's the kicker, my son's Nikon D610 with a Sigma 18-50 lens never missed a lick, zero issues. I've used my SDQ-H, SD1M, and SD15 in this type climate without issues. I now use the SDQ-H and FP for the different color modes.

Oh Well

Take care have fun

Just so's you know, Roger, the "feels like" temperature a la humans (wind chill factor) does not apply to cameras and lenses.

No idea what the manual says about working in the cold. But here in Sweden I have an extensive experience with cameras and the cold. Somehow my Sigma DP3M seems most vurnerable: it eats batteries like crazy when it is around 3F / -16 celcius - happhy if I can take 10 shots. My other cameras don't have these issues. Then again, I have batteries from fleabay

To be honest I don't know. It's was the back up to my SDQ-H which has to go back to Japan for repair. The SDQ has been sitting in the locker for awhile. It seems to work fine except for in the cold.

I'm going to start pushing it to find out.

Have fun

Neither do I. I need to look and see.

That's to bad. But no surprise.

My other cameras don't have these issues.

Yes. my son's D610 had no issue, but it could have been his batteries.

Then again, I have batteries from fleabay

I understand. I usually keep my batteries warm in my pocket, but didn't this time. The batteries may very well be the issue.

I have a GAS-habit and a plethora of cameras of different brands - but somehow my beloved Merrils seem to be most power-hungry (or maybe their batteries have the least capacity).

Roger J,

As a matter of interest, is the Firmware up to date in that sd Q. The early ones did have a cold weather problem which was fixed with a FW update.

Windchill should apply to any heat producing body, humans and cameras both produce heat.  A camera body will heat up less if the windchill increases at a given ambient temperature.

Roger J.

Roger J,

Firmware 1.09 had to do with cold weather operation, also see Firmware 1.12.

I think it would be worthwhile updating to FW 1.13. There should be no reason why you could not do it, if you follow the instructions.

FW 1.13 only adds Teal & Orange, but all earlier FWs would be included in it.

See details below.

S

Ver.1.13

2020.04.03

A color mode Teal and Orange has been added

Ver.1.12

2018.10.25

  • It has corrected the phenomenon whereby the camera freezes after reactivation from LCD Auto Off if the Viewfinder Mode or LCD Mode settings have been opened from the main menu.
  • It has shortened the time to recognize the card when an SDXC card is used.

Ver.1.11

2018.08.28

It has corrected the phenomenon whereby X3F files that have been extracted from X3I files cannot be developed a second time, if values are adjusted and saved onto the files using SIGMA Photo Pro.

Ver.1.10

2018.06.20

  • It has become possible to automatically retract the lens barrel of the 70mm F2.8 DG MACRO | Art, when the camera’s power is turned off.
  • It has set the maximum shutter speed in SFD (Super Fine Detail) Mode to 1/500 sec., so as not to duplicate shutter speeds of the individual images.
  • It has corrected the phenomenon that the X3F/X3I images taken with SIGMA Capture Pro cannot be developed properly when the value adjusted by SIGMA Photo Pro is saved to the file.
  • It has corrected the phenomenon that the images occasionally show some green or magenta color rendering after updating the firmware.

Ver.1.09

2018.04.13

It has improved the camera operation in low temperatures. Inconsistent performance of the viewfinder, main display, shutter and image saving has been improved.

Not correct. Windchill includes the effect of evaporation from human skin.

Definition of windchill

: a still-air temperature that would have the same cooling effect on exposed human skin as a given combination of temperature and wind speed.

https://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/windchill

A camera body will heat up less if the windchill increases at a given ambient temperature.

Sorta - but the claim does not include evaporation, only conduction, and that is not called windchill. In other words, "windchill" does not equal windspeed.

Living here in northern New England where we have been teased with a few days of 50-60F degrees, the last couple days of return to 0-10F (-15C) and 20-40 mph wind were just plain rude and my cameras and my fingers stayed inside where they didn’t need to worry about whether it felt like 0 or -10! 🙂. The relative contributions of conduction, convection, radiation, and evaporation all felt much better in front of the wood stove.

How did you format the card?

I had trouble with updating my e-car, turned out I had to format it in a FAT-way which I had to choose under the format-options.

No problem. The formula for windchill includes terms that account for evaporative cooling which is part of the windchill effect.

Without evaporative cooling, we humans would probably overheat and die. Dogs, too.

And, according to your claim, evaporative coolers can not work ...

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Evaporative_cooler

... and meteorologists would never have been able to measure humidity and dewpoint:

Hi S

I'm trying to get the Q to see the upgrade. I formatted the SD card, downloaded the firmware to the SD card inserted the SD card to the Q turned on the Q choose update but the camera fails to see the firmware update.

I'll keep trying

Thanks

Roger J.

How did you format the card?

I had trouble with updating my e-car, turned out I had to format it in a FAT-way which I had to choose under the format-options.

My 2 cents

For updating a camera, you have to format the card in the camera, not on a computer.

Then you can put the card in your card reader and copy the firmware file across to the root directory on the card. Not to the directory that the camera will put image files in.
