HI Dave,

That is quite a tale. I think a number of people will find it an interesting and useful read.

I'm pleased to hear it's looking like a very positive conclusion for you - thanks for sharing.

No lockups, and better af performance for me...
3

At least so far, I haven't had any lockups. Hoping to do more shooting this week. So far I've only had my r6 out, not my r5. I have noticed faster acquisition and stickier eye af tracking, which is a good thing. I've chatted with others and while there have been one or two lockups with 1.5.2, that is quite rare now and the majority are seeing noticeable improvements in af performance.

That sounds good.  I haven’t been back out because of rain, but hope to get out again soon.  I was shooting to a Sandisk extreme pro card when I had my lockup.  Hopefully it was an isolated incident, but I haven’t had enough problems to complain in almost a year with the camera.

I went from 1.5.1 to 1.5.2 on my R5.  On the 5.1, I only had one lockup after a few thousand shots and since then no lockup.  After updating to 1.5.2, it locked up after about 200 shots.  I did not have to take the battery out.  Just had to power it off and back on.  The eye focus is not as jittery as the 1.5.1.   I have been using back button AF and the * button since 1.4.

I experienced lockup the first day I had it out after upgrading, then it was fine until this evening. I removed the batteries (battery grip) and then reinserted them and the camera was functioning again. Thankfully this happened at the end of my session or I would have missed some wonderful owl shots & video.

I believe I experienced lock-ups from as early as 1.3. But since upgrading to 1.5.2 I haven't experienced any lock ups.

While it may have been the firmware that fixed it, I think correcting my folder settings was at least partly responsible for solving the issue. When I started using the focus bracketing feature in the early days of having the R5, I tried creating a specific folder for bracketed shots on my card. Long story short, my camera was writing data to both cards but with mismatching folder names. Changing my SD card folder setting so that it matched the CFExpress card folder name is what I think resolved my card lockup issues.

So for anyone else experiencing lock ups, it may be worth checking your folder settings if you happened to have a custom folder name.

Re: Poll: R5/ R6 Lock-ups with f/w 1.5.2…

I have had lockups on R5 before the 1.5.2.  This past week, I was doing an event shoot, 4 days straight, 2 hours each day.  Shot about 2,500 pics per day.  I was using EF 70-200 IS II and using back button focus and 1st curtain shutter.  I was shooting short burst of 3-5 shots or sometimes about 6-15 shots bursts.  I experienced a lock-up on the 3rd day and twice on the last day.  All 3 times, there was no warning.  The EVF and LCD screen were working but none of the buttons were working.  Turning on and off didn't fixed the problem, so I had to take out the battery and reinsert battery to make it work.  Lost a few shots but not too critical.  Can be frustrating.

Out of interest, for those who’ve upgraded to f/w 1.5.2 - have you experienced a lock-up?

Well dang, I thought I was out of the woods with v1.5.2 (until now).  I had problems with previous software versions.

I’ve shot tens of thousands of frames with v1.5.2 using only electronic shutter with the R5 + RF 100-500 +/- RF 1.4x.  Not one issue.  (I normally shoot short bursts)

Yesterday I decided to use full mShutter with H (not H+) bursts, and experienced two freeze-ups in a one hour period.  Nothing else was changed.  The freezes cleared (rebooted) within about 30 seconds by half pressing the shutter intermittently (didn’t have to pull the battery at least).

Now THAT’S a 1:1 correlation.

Looks like it’s back to eShutter for me!

Just had my first lockup with 1.5.2....

Just got back from a week in the Tetons/Yellowstone. Took about 4500 pics with my R5. I finally had one lockup somewhere during the week..popped the battery out and back in and went on shooting. Not ideal, but if this happens only every once in a while I can live with it.
