Poll: R5/ R6 Lock-ups with f/w 1.5.2…

Out of interest, for those who’ve upgraded to f/w 1.5.2 - have you experienced a lock-up?

For my part I’ve gone from f/w 1.3.1 to 1.5 to 1.5.2.  Zero lock-ups (so far!).

Aa well as voting, any other comments, or observations are also welcome.

No lockups with any iteration of FW with my R6.  First outing with 1.5.2 and while the animal eye AF was decent prior to the upgrade, today with my 100-500 it seemed to lock on and hold much quicker/better.

Animal eye tracking seems to me to be better. This is subjective and not measured.

Main problem of FW1.5.1 is AF jumping,  not the lock up.

You guys just off topic of 1.5.2 that fixed.

Obviously it's out of focus on eyes.

Anyway, squirrels are the animals most difficult to to get razer sharp eyes by eye AF among many wildlife i had experienced. I'm not saying R5 cannot Eye-AF a squirrel sharp, just lower hit rate compared with stationed birds or lizards, other mammals.

Their eyes are unique maybe, very spherical with faint iris edge.

I have had both the R5 & R3 since initial shipment.  I have also rented the R6 as a backup for the R5 before the R3 arrived.  I had one lockup of the R5 in the very early firmware, but nothing since.  I only shoot RF lenses (after the 100-500 arrived), not sure that makes a difference.  I have used the following RF lenses on the R5/R3 with their latest firmware releases at the time.

RF 24-105 f4 L IS

RF 70-200 f4 L IS

RF 100-500 f4.5-7.1 L IS

RF 100-400 f5.6 - 8 IS

RF 85mm f2.

RF 600 f4 L IS (Rental form Lensrentals for a Yellowstone trip)

RF 1.4x TC

Hi Nimonus,

There have been several threads on this forum in which lock-ups under various iterations of f/w have been plaguing some people. This is something which can be readily voted on.

I haven’t had a lock-up problem, but I am hoping those that have may find this resolved.

In terms of AF performance, I haven’t had any problems either, my R5 has been very quick to acquire focus - and very sticky during tracking, both in general and with eye AF. This is something where changes are less easy to assess as multiple settings can influence things along with what you shoot and where you shoot it. I do know some are frustrated by AF.

This poll only addresses the lock-up issues, maybe another could look at AF performance?

Thank you to everyone who’s voted so far, the results are looking encouraging.

1. It doesn't not mention the fix of freezing issue by Canon with FW1.5.2, it was mentioned from the upgrading of FW1.5.1

2. We need not to reject the product problem that from manufacturer. In this case, issue of AF. You don’t have the problems that Canon said about their camera,  good luck! You are exceptional.

As you may have read on this forum some people have been experiencing lock-ups with every iteration of f/w, including 1.5.1, but so far there's been no reports of this happening with 1.5.2. This is the sole point of this poll - to try to assess whether a fix has been made. If this is the case I will be very happy for those who were suffering with this annoying issue.

(I'm not convinced Canon mention each and every bug fix in their f/w release notes).

2. We need not to reject the product problem that from manufacturer. In this case, issue of AF. You don’t have the problems that Canon said about their camera, good luck! You are exceptional.

There may be a case for a separate poll - which anyone is welcome to start.

If no-one does, I may start one once I've has a chance to fully assess the AF with f/w 1.5.2 (this process was not assisted by the fact that when we reached the woods earlier today I opened my rucksack to find an EF 100-400 LII lens and adapter, but no R5... 🙄🤦🏻‍♂️🤷🏻‍♂️).

However, I've not had an AF problem with any of the f/w versions I've used and I think it's difficult to assess if this is due to my set-up, techniques, expectation levels, or luck. I need to do more shooting before I can fully assess if there have any changes (for me) with 1.5.2.

Re: Poll: R5/ R6 Lock-ups with f/w 1.5.2…

I had rather frequent lockups before 1.5.1.  With 1.5.1 I had no lockups despite pretty heavy use photographing birds.  Yesterday I updated to 1.5.2 and headed out to see if I could see any AF improvement, though I was generally happy with AF from the time I bought the camera last Spring.  I did think that eye focus was better, but I also had a lockup requiring me to remove and reinsert the battery early in the day.  I had an interruption in my shooting and didn't get a chance to see if this lockup was isolated, and its raining outside today, bit I will be shooting more in the next couple of days, hoping I don't have any more problems.  Birds don't usually sit still long enough for me to remove and reinsert the battery.

Hi Dan,

Thanks for the update, sorry to hear about the lock-up (the first crack in 1.5.2?).

Out of interest, we’re you using BBF/ AI Servo and what lens did you have fitted?

I've had a look-up this morning while shooting with R5 and RF 100-500 using BBF.

Have had a look-up or two before, with 1.3.0 I think, but this was the first one in months now. Didn't needed to remove the batery though, and just turned off the camera and it recovered after a few seconds.

R5 with EF 100-400 Mk2 and EF 1.4x Mk3, BBF and Servo on.  I had just fired off a burst of two or three seconds.

I installed the 1.5.2 firmware yesterday morning on my R6 and spent most of the day taking photos of birds and all morning today.  I’ve been using the RF 800mm f/11, RF 100-400 and EF 500mm f/4L IS USM w/EF 1.4x II and have had no lockups (I actually haven’t ever had the R6 lock up so far) and AF behavior seems to be more to my liking than 1.5 so I’m pretty happy so far.

Hi Dan

As you may have read, we have that lens (and we also have the extender).  I may configure for BBF/ AI Servo and go out for a session tomorrow, or else Monday.  I’ll see how it goes.

Cheers for the feedback…

Same for me with my R6 using only RF lenses, triple BBAF in Servo, and H+ drive mode. I also had no problem with AF grabbing what I wanted in any of these versions.

Good poll, Phil. Thanks for doing it!

Hi Dan,

We went out this morning for a 2 hour wood/ canal towpath walk with my R5 + Control Ring EF-RF Adapter + EF Extender 1.4x III + Canon EF 100-400mm LII lens. I configured my R5 for BBF, Servo AF (Case 2), Animal Eye-AF. In all 850+ (raw) shots were taken with zero lock-ups.

The majority of the shots were written to a 64GB SanDisk Extreme PRO 300MB/s SD Card, but near the end of the walk I swapped to the CFexpress and took the final 50 or so shots. The cards were formatted in camera before starting and I used a Canon LP-E6NH battery.

I'm not sure where this takes you, but there you go...

Setup R5 + RF 100-500, BBF, Servo, Eye tracking (often +1.4 and 2x RF converters)

Sony Tough 128Gb CF Express Card

no issues with FW 1.4

numerous lockups with FW1.5 rolled back to FW1.4

numerous lockups with FW 1.5.1 (in fact I thought it made it worse with more frequent lockups - rolled back to FW 1.4

(zero lockups when reverting back to shutter button focus on FW 1.5 or 1.5.1)

regularly contact with CPS (UK) who asked for my settings but couldn’t replicate the problem, though they saw nothing untoward about my settings.

Reset the camera, updated to 1.5.2 and re-loaded the settings I sent to Canon.

Now the good news….

I’ve taken 3000+ shots since installing 1.5.2
Camera has been flawless and ZERO lockups (including with converters) and not only that I honestly feel the AF is better than ever. The camera is a joy to use again.

Hope others have an equally positive outcome.
Dave
