Occasional blank images, throw camera in trash or is there a solution?

I get occasional blank/black images. Maybe 1 in 40. Missed a really nice shot today. Using an XE2, pretty old now. Time to throw in the trash or has anyone found a solution yet?

I have seen threads where many have the same issue, but no answer. There is no common thing here, the camera is broken e.g. I use different cards, lenses, SS, aperture etc.. and it always happens. It never happened for a long time. No settings changed.

Thanks.

Guessing you don’t chimp ? ! 😀 Guessing you tried the basics ? - New memory card, Raw + jpeg ?

But it sounds like the camera could still be used on non-critical stuff.  Personally wouldn’t throw it away.. and just to confirm the black image has no data ?

Yep

It has exif data, but nothing weird like high SS. I will just be honest selling it and may get £100 as the prices have gone up £100 recently to ~£260.

Wishing I hadn't ordered that XT10 for when I get back to the UK in a few months. Might grab a graphite XA5 for now, curious to see if the Bayer files are better in Lightroom.

Apparently switching to EE may fix it but that's no good to me.

Might grab a graphite XA5 for now, curious to see if the Bayer files are better in Lightroom.

Example: Fujifilm X-T100

Raw Files - https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/1D_z287hrgSyyCawd2Xeh1L5YYm2FbclD

Source - https://mirrorlesscomparison.com/galleries/fujifilm-xt100-sample-shots/

Example File:

DSCF0138.RAF - Actually looks great (Adobe LR + default sharpening). Try it out for yourself.

Have you tried to bracket exposures, say a third of a stop to see if all the frames are blank or just one in the set ?

Re: Occasional blank images, throw camera in trash or is there a solution?

These look great, thank you.

Now gone from 95 to 99% changing to a Bayer camera when I get home. Might even keep the XE2 for the occasional trip down memory lane and as an ornament. Just missed a great deal on a graphite XA5, but will also add the XT100 to the search.

I know people say Lightroom is cool with Xtrans but even with an XT3 I wasn't convinced. Want to order my Leica CL now but after seeing someone selling a camera with marks on the sensor the other day I am sceptical. Will start a thread about the UK seller. Now I know I can use Fuji Sims on other brands there is nothing stopping me leaving Fuji's crappy left EVFs.

Thanks - doesn't seem anything wrong with the file structure - doesn't seem corrupted - just blank (and blank thumbnail and preview images).

Re: SD card issue?

Could it be a SD card issue? Have you tried different SD cards? Do you format the memory cards in the camera? I would change the SD card and format always using the camera before using it.

Re: Occasional blank images, throw camera in trash or is there a solution?

Any chance you're putting it in your bag while it's still on, or alternatively, it's getting switched on while in your bag, and the shutter is being activated? I ask because this was happening to me. Seems like a most obvious course of investigation?

An other, far more distant connection might be that while this was happening to me, I also appeared to be suffering from a failing shutter button, which eventually rendered the camera unusable and required a trip to Fuji Canada for servicing (still there, it's being repaired, I miss it incredibly). I don't know if there is any connection between the two (the black frames and the failing shutter button) but it might be worth looking into?

Just thoughts.

Before the trash :

reset to defauilt

try different sdcard formatted in the computer using the complete (not the fast one) formatting process

test batteries use different batteries

check for Firmware body and lens

use different format for record (JPeg with without raw, different size)

report

Good luck

This is a common complaint when a camera's shutter is going to totally fail.  Another common symptom is a frame with part of it dark.

Try taking the lens off and watch the shutter opperate.  You may see it happen.  If you don't observe the problem, try using the electronic shutter and if no issues you know the mechanical shutter is failing.

Even if the mechanical shutter is failing, you can use the electronic one as long as the shutter dose not jam covering the sensor.

Good luck,

Morris

Yes, but with the important caveat that it doesn’t work well for motion photography, often resulting in unwelcome artifacts.  For anything else, it’s certainly a decent substitute until the shutter can be repaired.

Before to decide than the shutter (MS) is broken  it couild be serviced for lubrif ication

Very few people use a camera till the end of the 150000 actuations. The use of only ES is a problem for fast targets.
