Nikon teleconverter shims

Hello to all friends of the forum,
some time ago (in an attempt to remove the tab to make a Nikon TC17E II teleconverter more compatible) I inadvertently ruined one of the three thin metal shims located under the front bayonet of the teleconverter.

I tried to fix the shim, but when I reassemble the teleconverter, the automatic diaphragm mechanism doesn't work well and mounting (and dismounting) the teleconverter on a lens is really hard!!!

This morning, I tried to reassemble the teleconverter leaving only the two shims intact and not mounting the damaged shim. Apparently everything works correctly (at least with the 300mm and 500mm PF lenses) and mounting seems easy again.

But I ask you two questions:

- Is it possible that Nikon inserts a useless piece (the shim I have damaged) in its teleconverter?
- Is it possible to find the spare part to restore the teleconverter correctly?

Thanks in advance to all those who will dedicate some of their time to me.
Toni

Re: Nikon teleconverter shims

I don't believe they'd add a part that doesn't do anything.

It might be the shim is only needed with shorter focal lengths, longer lenses are more tolerant of changes in registration. It might be without the shim your lenses will not reach all the way to infinity under some temperature conditions when they would have done previously...

It might be it's added to prevent the TC being used for lenses it's not designed to work with!

Re: Nikon teleconverter shims

Perhaps, Nikon's E-series lenses have electro-magnetic aperture control and don't need the automatic aperture lever ... sadly (or not-sadly) I don't have long non-E-type NIkon lenses ...
