About the GH6's 6k video

Will there be firmware update adding real 6k video (5760x3240, multiple of 1920x1080) added to GH6 in the future, and if no - what's the problem with it being realized?

PS - I know there is 5760x4320, but it's 30fps only, and I got to crop later

Yes, I've wondered the same thing prior to introduction. It would be precisely 6K UHD, and a simple FW crop of the open-gate 5760x4320 to the 16:9 above would do it, and maybe even run @ 60p with the substantially fewer pixels.

Panny "cheated" a bit with the "5.7K" video by shaving it down to a slightly narrower and higher non-standard AR of 17:9, to 5728x3024 to get 6op, I guess, but still not a huge bitrate @ 300Mbps for the sensor..

BTW, the open gate format is slightly cropped from the full sensor width 5776px so that the width is evenly divided b 8 for smoother running video. Same for the 5.7K.

Well, 50 fps is enough for me, since I live in PAL region.

But what's the thing, not having even 24 fps with that resolution, is beyond me ..

Yes, the ability to conform it to a 4K UHD timeline without cropping would be nice! I predict that will be coming in a FW update.

Re: About the GH6's 6k video

I have made some calculations, and the pixels for 5728x3024 at 60 fps are enough for 5760x3240 at 55 fps

Every codec has to support 60 50 48 30 25 24 fps

or 30 25 24 fps

55 fps does not mean anything to anyone so if it can't do 60 then it wont happen

It was estimation, and btw there is PAL region, you know..

Edit: 30, 25 and 24 will do it too!

I don't understand Panny's choice not to offer 16:9 AR's 5.7K video. i can't believe it's a processing problem for 50/60p "6K UHD" as the video frame would be only 8% larger than the 60p 5.7K frame -18.7 vs 17.4 MP, with its 300 Mbps bit-rate. This is chump-change for the processor's power, as other of its formats/codecs record at up to 800 on an SD card.

Seems like a simple FW update could add it...

17:9 is available I think the question was 4:3 that has less pixels

The original question was about implementing 16:9  5760 x 3240 "6K UHD" 60p, which the sensor is certainly capable of doing - as the open gate 5.8K 4:3 30p has the same frame width, but is about 7MP larger than the 18.3 MP of our desired 16:9.

Are you complaining about the C4K instead of UHD?

There are certain standards - if I have standard 8k tv, then it will be 16:9 with resolution multiple of 1920x1080, so having video with that aspect and that multiplicity is key for achieving great viewing experience.

PS - the best case scenario that could be is full 8k video, but the gh6's sensor is too low in horizontal resolution for that

The standards that exist at present for broadcast level with aspect ratio 16:9 are

HD         1920x1080

UHD      3840x2160

UKH 8K 7680x3240

For Digital Cinema (17:9) and supported by ProRes there are

4K          4096x2160

5K          5120x2700

6K          6144x3240

8K          8192x4320

Panasonic 5.7k modes sit in between 5K and 6K for DCI

As those 17:9 modes are delivered with ProRes I think they are also offering the long gop in addition however there is no requirement for 5 6 k or intermediate in UHD as there are no actual standards whatever anyone can think

Personally am not planning to use any of those options as I deliver in 4K and binning in camera is more efficient

4k on GH6 is actually not binning pixels, but rather oversampling from the full width of the sensor, except for 120fps mode.

However, what's the problem with having 5760x3240, if the GH6 can't deliver 8k - everybody wins, both the owners of 8k tv's and owners of 5k displays.

The thing is, can Panasonic deliver ?

I am sure they can but I don't think anybody is bothered to ask this specific requirement

You can contact Panasonic I guess.

It's just strange to think Panasonic bothered to make 17:9 and 4:3 six K video, but forgot 16:9...

Well, yeah - I have contacted them, at least the department in my country, and they said:

"Lumix GH6 does support

5.7K – MOV - 5728x3024 (17:9)
5.8K – MOV - 5760x4320 (4:3) "

So don't expect six k 16:9 in near time.
