Canon RP: JPEG and RAW colours are significantly different

My question is, why does the JPEG (.jpg) files captured on Canon RP significantly different from the RAW (.cr3) files? When I say different, the colors are different.

While the JPEGs capture properly exposed images the RAWs capture images that are significantly underexposed with harsh shadows and contrast.

Of course, with the wide dynamic range of the RAW, I can bring the image back to match the colors of the JPEG but having to do that on every image to bring back the lost details on the bright white areas is absurd. I am not expecting two files to be exactly the same straight out of the camera.

Also, yes, I am using a custom color profile downloaded from the Canon website (video x) but just because I use the profile it should not make the RAW image distorted.

I know it sounds crazy but when the camera meters for the light, do the exposure values only apply to the JPEG?

Am I doing something wrong? Is there a tip on exposing the RAW image correctly in the camera? Is this the problem that only persists in RP or all of the other EOS R series cameras?

The JPEG is simply taking the RAW data and processing it in camera. You could achieve the same thing in DPP if you’re shooting RAW, but it’s not “baked” into the file so you have the full latitude with your data.

If you’re using LR or another RAW converter, then you should use the camera profiles within the software to mimic how Canon would process them.

The source data is the same for your RAW exposure and the JPEG that’s rendered—they’re not separately metered or separate sets of data.

What program are you using to process?  If you use Canon DPP it will match in camera JPEG.

I am using Adobe Photoshop (Camera RAW) but I should try Canon DPP. Thanks for the tip.

You should get exactly the same as in-camera jpeg if you process in DPP. It also doesn't help that you are using a custom profile in-camera. That's going to look different from the raws, for sure.

I think Adobe hasn't had decent profiles for R cameras until recently, in case you're running an older version of LR. I only had this problem with my M6 2, but I know people reported getting dark images in LR. I never had the problem with my R5. But I also use a custom profile in my M6 2, so maybe it comes down to that.

Seems like you  might have Auto Lighting Optimizer enabled which is not recognised by a third party raw converter . Check you camera setting to see if this is enabled .
