SL1 and my old Canon Lenses
1

Newbie... so not sure if this is the right forum, if not, let me know and I'll move it to the correct one.

My question is simple: I have a collection of Canon lenses, from my film days and was wondering if there's an adapter that I can get so that I can use these lenses on my SL1?

Thanks

Found my answer. Looks like it's a lost cause with these old lenses. From what I've gathered, focusing to infinity will be an issue with these lenses.

Well, I tried to see if any thing has changed since the last time I looked into this.

If you are referring to Canon Fl/FD/FDn lenses, there are adapters that can work with your modern Canon camera.  The adapters have optics inside them to make infinity focus possible.  There are a few downsides though.  First, the optics in the adapter may decrease contrast and sharpness of the lens.  Then there is the issue of the adapter being a slight teleconverter design.  This means the focal length will change, not counting the 1.6x crop for APS-C. However, even with these flaws, the lenses will still work with your camera, manual focus and aperture of course.

They're EF lenses.

Then you just slap them on the SL1 and you use them as you normally would.

Then you do not need an adapter.  They should be fully compatible and able to focus to infinity.

Yes I do need an adapter. The lenses don't connect. Different connectors on them. I've tried. Doesn't even come close.

All Canon EF lenses are compatible with Canon EOS EF and EF-S bodies. They all have the same mount, with the same flange distance so they do not need a adapter. What lenses are you trying to use?

Using old film lenses for digital DSLR cameras might not be always best. The digital EF and EF-S lenses are so relatively inexpensive; that's all you might need to get the best quality. My favorite EF-S lens that I bought on Ebay was my previously owned 18-135mm USM lens. I got it for a price of about $150 including shipping. I've never seen one priced that low. It is still being used and is high quality (for the price). I was fortunate that it was in such good condition.

Are your film lenses FD mount instead of EF mount? If we can't help and you still want to use your old lenses, consider asking this question on the Canon SLR Lens Talk forum. From what I read a few minutes ago the previous poster is right that EF lenses should work on your Canon SL1 (100D) camera without an adapter. That's why I'm questioning the mount.

Canon lenses from my old AE1... film. Which I think is the problem.

Mike,

Then they are not EF lenses. They are probably FD lenses.

I had an AT-1 camera that had the FD mount. I got a Fotodiox Pro adapter to allow me to use my FD lenses on my Canon T6. Just be aware that it will be manual focus, and you have to manually set your aperture.

You can get one of those adapters on Amazon here:

Canon AE-1 use Canon FD mount, and not EF mount. If you are still looking for an adapter, see my first post.

No well not in any meaningful full way  the adoptor has to have an optic which is not very good

i have quite a fetish for MF glass and use a 50mm f1.4 FDn  and others regularly

now trying to focus MF glass through the poky SL1/100D viewfinder is a challenge

its best to use the live view as with canon a dab and swipe  or 2 will have you zoomed in 5 or 10X anywhere on the back screen forgoodt focusing  .. which is not much good to you if you can't fit the lenses

But all canons with a touch interface are like this which means the canon M mk1 MILC (or any other M body} which will fit any MF lens as adaptors are made for about every mount and is very cheap ..the big problem with the M was VERY slow AF but that don't matter to you

i dont know what your budget is or how many FD lenses you have but a better option that gives you an EVF and focus peaking to help with focus when using an VF is the old Sony full-frame A7..again one of the main problems with the A7 was poor AF

so its just an option for you to think about

be warned the MF lens bug can be pretty contagious and you may end up with more MF lenses than AF lenses

I probably misstated what the lenses were... so it appears that they are FD lens. I have about a half dozen of them. I hate to just throw them away if they could be used.

no, i understand that they are FD lenses from Canons manual focus film cameras

they will adapt to any mirrorless (ML) body very well but not to DSLRs very well like your SL1

as i say in my last post, it may be worth getting a cheap ML body to use them depending on what they are they are, as they are getting more expensive to buy on ebay

a quick look on eBay UK the 1st Canon FD 50mm f1.4 i see sold  in completed listings went for 119GBP

Don't throw them away!  If they're in good usable condition sell them to KEH and use the money you get to buy EF lenses for your SL1!

As already mentioned, your FD lenses will work (manually of course) on mirrorless cameras with a simple adapter.  They will also work on your SL1 for closeup work with an adapter without glass in it.  I use my FD 135mm on my DSLR for flower photos all the time.
