Underwater housing

GDome have brought out a Mirrorless/DSLR underwater housing that is much more reasonably priced than others I have seen. Wondered what peoples thoughts on it are?

3) The GDome XL is rated for 5m/15ft max depth, we know it can go deeper however we limit the rating for the safety of your camera. The GDome XL is not a dive housing and should not be treated as a dive housing due to the flexible rear membrane. If you would like a housing with a solid backdoor (that will be able to achieve a deeper depth), they are available (optional extra +$35), however, you will need to add your own buttons in order to get the functionality that you require.

This product is aimed at the pool crowd, and maybe the topside snorkelers.   I don't think it would be up the the task for surf photography.

From a price perspective, you can get model specific housings from Seafrog for 3 digit prices for many cameras.

While those aren't universal, neither truly is this product which requires specific modifications to use the shutter.  The 10 bolt closure also makes it awkward to use.   Last, the universal design means a bulkier housing and while the optics will be fine for the flat port, the image quality for the dome rely on the appropriate distance for the camera/lens combo, and may not be achievable in the one size fits all design.

I would hesitate to call it 'underwater', or, indeed a 'housing'. Looks like one step above a soft bag. It's flexible, so you can't use it at anything even resembling a depth - my guess is at 1-2 meters everything will get pushed in. No vacuum system, so higher chance of leakage. Extremely bulky as well, and unlike a soft bag, you can't roll it up.

Re: Underwater housing

Thanks for the link, its interesting for several reasons, but specially its "universal" appeal for any camera body. For shooting surf and for snorkeling , more than enough.

Having said that , for about the same price you can buy a Seafrogs housing w/ lens port , but not the dome one. And its much more secure, me thinks. Albeit not universal, you must sell the housing if you change cameras.

Re: Underwater housing

I am a little biased as I am one of the owners of GDome. I can definitely tell you from a lot of experience that even with the flexible rear back screen, it can take a beating in the waves, so it is not like the other soft bag options out there. It also comes with the solid backdoor in the surf edition configuration (not sure if you have seen the hammer test we did? It can literally take a beating with a metal hammer so you can imagine what it is capable of!) We did not design the XL range to go deep, it is mainly made for shallow applications.
We have really focused on offering the most value for money out there, so much so that we are offering a free XL for anyone that can beat this challenge:

Re: Underwater housing

Is that an 18" wave there?

As tor the "challenge," no one will be able to collect given the long list of subjective descriptions and specific design choices.   It's like the job postings that government agencies post when they are doing an internal hire, but still have to go through open recruiting.

Re: Underwater housing

it is a fair point, happy to bring it down to a universal housing that comes with a pistol trigger, dome port & flat port with full rear touch functionality 😉

it is pretty much an impossible challenge to be honest, but hopefully it shows what great value we offer 😎
