Mystifying NX1 problem

This friends, is a first for me and NX1.  During an outdoor shoot, temp abt 30 degrees F, viewfinder/screen went too dark to frame photo.  Shutter continued to work; virtually dark shots came back in post with a four-stop boost, imagine.

In the shoot: turned the camera off and on; popped the battery, which was at 87%: no effect. Shook it, yelled; still nothing.

The sequence: a half-press would produce normal view-finder sighting, auto focus a little slow; but as soon as focusing box went green and I tried to plunge the shutter button: all went dark.  Yikes.

All I can think of as a cause: I believe I'd foolishly left the camera's power on during lens change, with sensor pointed upwards at (heavily over-cast) sky.  Could that be it?  Later, inside, normal function seems to have returned.  Naturally though my confidence is undermined.

Ideas?

No ideas, but good to know you got your camera back.

Never experienced or heard of anything like this.

Operating again on all cylinders one day later; carrying an additional body as insurance, though.

Thanks Wahid.

The semi-visible minus-four-stop images I was getting (before correction) looked like polarized negatives, you know that printing effect that comes from superimposing negative and positive images, with a metallic quality.

I'll report on whatever happens next, expect to be using my well-loved NX1 every day.

at 30f could it be your battery lost most of its power even though display showed it was ok. In which case with another battery that is newer…should not happen. Would be like a car battery in the cold versus in warmer temperatures, only in the cold do you find out the battery is not holding the correct amperage . Just a thought.

Thanks doceyes.  If this happens again I will certainly slip in a warm battery.

I'm assuming I'm misunderstanding something...sorry if this is a condescending guess, but if your shots are also dark on your computer in post, it sounds like you are in a manual mode showing live exposure and are simply underexposing? it's normal for half press to show you the scene to help with composing, but once focus is acquired to show you the effect of your exposure settings.

No worries about attitude James, all questions are fair when we confront a Mystery.

Yes I was in manual mode, as always, but my settings were correct.  The different nature of this problem is shown by the fact that screen/viewfinder cycled between clear image and virtual black, with no intervention by me: a moment of clarity, than blackout.

The problem's still not returned.

Temperature, as suggested earlier, that may have affected the battery here may also have been the cause of another problem that has not occurred lately, that is:  an unwanted mode switch, from normal to timer, so that when I press the shutter I get a maddening delay instead of a click.  Heat may be a cause there.  Once it appears it could take a while to shake off,  minutes of retrying.  Nothing works,  then it goes away,  Anyone ever encounter this?

On the subject of batteries, does anybody have experience over time with the Watson BP 1900?  At B&H this is the only replacement left for the Samsung.  Just had a a Watson LP-E6(-JWP) go dead, after not much use.
