Oly v Panny straps

As I was worried when Olympus went to the wall I purchased a second Em1-mk2 body. Frankly I couldn't envisage enjoying my photography if I could no longer access the fantastic features that camera provides. Anyway....

Initially I used both. But for many months now keep using the same one, and this morning realised why!

My Panasonic cameras have a nice slim lightweight and more importantly flexible camera straps, whereas the Olympus straps are big and wide and frankly quite stiff - and of course have a big Olympus logo.

So shortly after I purchased my first em1-mk2 I removed the strap - which I hated, - and fitted the one from my no longer used Panasonic GX7.

Happy days.

The strap is far less conspicuous, soft and so easily folds into a tiny camera bag. Whereas my 2nd new backup camera with the Olympus strap doesn't fold well and also requires a larger bag or that I leave the diminutive 9-18 Oly lens behind.

I also find the - no doubt sturdier but inflexible - Olympus strap a nuisance when you take the camera off and place it on a table when stopping for a cream tea, etc.

So the upshot is, instead of wearing two cameras out gradually together, I always instinctively grab the older one everytime!

I have never been one advocating free company advertising on clothing and hate wearing 'Brands' anyway.

So now my Olympus. Cameras have straps advertising Panasonic

But how do others 'who use shoulder straps' feel about this difference between the Panasonic and Olympus straps and which do you prefer?

I haven't used a camera makers strap in 30 years. Peak Design is my choice these days.

The strap with more megapixels will win, hands down.

Hmmm... my G9 came with a relatively wide strap with a big 'G9' embroidered on it, whereas my E-M1ii's strap is less wide and definitely more flexible... (bought the camera used, so it may not be an original E-M1ii strap, although it does say Olympus).

I use a wrist strap or a PD slide on the G9. The E-M1ii normally only wears PD anchor links -- and sometimes it ends up advertising Olympus, sometimes the G9 or the GF1.

I replaced all of the straps with quality leather straps found on Amazon. I don't like straps with company logo regardless of brands.

I echo the others......

Pentax, Canon now Olympus....covering >50 years of usage.....I have never used the supplied strap.

OpTech is/was my preferred choice though now (changed during my Canon period) the Black Rapid. Yes, it is stiffer and more bulky but IMO It 'just works' for me.  NB thinking back to my Pentax days....I can't recall which I used but it was not the makers strap

The above bearing in mind 90% of the time I have bigger lenses with their tripod foot attachment point

Not often these days I put my 12-40 zoom on but for the Mk2 and then the Mk3 the body has the AS plate attached so I use the BR strap as required!

Try the Peak Design “Leash” strap. Similar to the Panasonic straps without the nasty logo. They feel real nice, too! AND… NO LOGO! I used to black out strap logos with a permanent marker, but no more.

https://www.peakdesign.com/products/leash?_pos=4&_sid=c784a17c2&_ss=r

I used one with my now departed GX7 and use a Peak Design Slide Lite with my GX8.

One of the great things about the Peak Design straps is that once you mount their anchor links on your camera(s), it’s easy to swap straps. (They give you 2 pairs!) Wider for bigger, heavier lenses, narrower for smaller. It’s also easy to remove the strap for tripod work.

They’re revelatory.

Piling on, think the last OEM strap I used came with my E-M5. Changed to the Black Rapid system and have not taken one out of the box, since.

If I had the E-M5iii I would need a different plan, but do not so no biggie.

Cheers,

Rick

Black markers and electrical tape. The enemies of camera logos.

Ah yes I forgot to mention all my cameras have ultra small quick release 'lobster clasps' attached to the camera, which allows for strap removal for long exposures in windy conditions.

Neither. I use a Matin neoprene strap because I’ve found that its shoulder pad is nice and .‘grippy’, and doesn’t feel that it’s about to slip off my shoulder.

I'm just curious to know, from those who hate logos, does it extend to your cars, refrigerators, etc , or just to cameras?

Know folks who special order de-badged cars. It's a thing, I guess. OTOH some vehicles, especially SUVs and pickups, look like they've been sprayed by the badge machine. So many fiddly details, and here I am with no decoder ring. (They're really annoying when you wax the car. Do the youngs wax cars?)

Cheers,

Rick

Yes. All of the above. You? 🤔

I tape over the red dot logo on my Leica cameras.

I debadged my Mustang Shelby 500 GT to make it look like a lowly Mustang 4 popper.

Why?  Because they are high value targets for scumbag thieves.

I heard that those matt finishes are very hard to maintain, and if you like the look, no sense in polish it to make it shining, but I've never owned one of those, and provably never will

Re: Oly v Panny straps

To me, it is a complete non-issue.  I never use the manufacturer strap.  Unless they are paying to do so, I don't see the need to advertise which brand of camera I use.  In fact, I'm getting the E-m1 mark II ready for sale, and I had to hunt around for the strap to include with the gear.

I tend to go back and forth between the Peak Designs straps (slide, slide lite, or leash depending on the camera size) and the Domke gripper straps (wide vs. thin based on the camera size).

My old binoculars got the Pen-F strap

I also still have an old Fuji bridge camera that got upgraded with an EM5 strap.

Camera makers include straps that cost them just a couple $ to make. Just to get the new owner going. Everyone has his own preferences. There are so many very nice aftermarket straps for cameras. I like them best with Peak Design clips for quick removal when the strap is in the way.

I make my own

For the past several years, I have made my own straps with Rayon.

The stuff I use is very soft but very strong and can easily hold my camera and largest lens. Although it is thin, it does not dig in and is very comfortable. I make shoulder straps and not neck straps.

Each strap costs less than $2 to make.
