Let's say I wanted to have m6 mkii AA filter removed...

Now I'm not saying I'm seriously considering sending my m6 mark ii in to Life Pixel just to have them remove the AA filter...

But I AM curious what the effect would be.

Generally speaking, I know it helps with sharpness. I know it can introduce moiré. I know there's a WB tint and Canon's sensor cleaning can't be used anymore with this conversion.

What I'm wondering is:

1. What is the effect of AA filter removal on the 32.5MP sensor vs, say, a 20MP one? I want to say I've read somewhere that higher MP means the AA filter is less necessary, but maybe I have that wrong.

2. What is the effect on sharpness of an image that's shot with a soft lens (like the kit zooms) vs. the 32mm 1.4?

3. What is the effect on video? If my use case is mainly shooting interiors like for real estate (where I'm not worried about moiré), would AA filter removal net me sharper video over what I'm getting now with the m6 mark ii?

Like I said, this is a curiosity at this point. I got my m6 mk ii a few months ago and it's really reignited my passion for photography. I somehow stumbled on Photolab 5 before discovering this community here, and that's really made me appreciate this little camera even more.

I'm just wondering how this service would transform this particular camera, with its limitations on video and the soft-ish zoom lenses being what they are.

I don't think they list any m camera in their service list but I am very curious to see the result. If you don't mind the potential WB shift, I think you should go for it.

I don't think it will affect video much. The video is very soft due to upscaling anyway.

Life Pixel converted my M3 to infrared by installing their "Super Color IR filter", so I'm guessing they can also just remove the AA filter. Regarding the OP's question, I have no idea, since my camera was converted to IR.

Yeah it’s not in the service list but they do sell both m50s and m6s with conversion options available.

I figured as much with video, but now I’m wondering if the most dramatic change would be with cropping.

I wonder if it possible to have the bayer filter removed but keep doing "normal" spectrum photography...

Hey Claude,

this is what I’m referring to. Keeps the “normal” spectrum. Unless I’m misunderstanding your Q…

Removing the Bayer filter array would turn the camera into a black and white monochrome camera.  It would also require the removal of the micro lenses that are on each pixel.

the bayer filter is the one that transform a black and with sensor into a color one by adding a color filter Red, Green, Blue, or Green, yes Green comes twice, but it is the one closest to the sensor bellow a lot of very usefull filters, probably too risky to remove...
