I'm looking for a good high powered flashlight for backlighting for soap bubbles, and good fresnel..

I watched a Youtube video with him being interviewed and he was talking about his amazing snowflake shots and soap bubbles as they freeze.

I've done both, but not with the technique he's used. Note to self: his is better.

I'd like to get a good high powered flashlight but I'm guessing they're all LED now, which will mean flicker issues, especially if I try to do any video. Also, I wasn't sure which brand of fresnel sheets are good quality and size. Also strong enough not to flop over with a light breeze.

I've been using sunlight as a back light, but living in SW Ontario means that opportunities to do bubbles in sunlight at low enough temps are usually few and far between.

Thanks for any help you can offer.

No, LEDs are not yet good enough for flash, which use xenon bulbs. Godox offer a good cheap range of flashes.

You mean what Europeans like me would call a torch

Like this?

Sorry this might just be a language mix up?

Got a link to the video?

Kinda tough to determine how bright the light source needs to be.

Yes, a torch.

Here is a link to the video.

Video

23:30 is a good place to start. It shows his setup just after this.

I had to go back and look, because the video link above is to a later part of the video and I stopped watching after Don said he was putting subjects in his freezer to slow them down.

I think just about any modern high intensity LED flashlight will work to illuminate a bubble, and you can probably skip the Fresnel lens that Don was using. I think he was using the torch as the light source, so the brighter the better.

I'd like to do video too, so flicker is the problem. :/

Updated video link.

It's just a few sec's after where the link goes to.

I use a Lenser P7, great light for photography. Adjustable focus bright light.
