short docu shot with the Nx1 and 16-50mm S zoom lens

I picked up a used Nx1 (upon inspection, it had wear and tear, but is very functional) and 16-50 S lens some time ago for a thousand bucks.

Extremely pleased with the video it provided... much cleaner, better color and more detailed than the micro 43rd Panasonic G85 I have. Shot a very short video last week... with the Master black pedestal at 14 to avoid a very crushed black look at the standard settings. The autofocus of the S lens proved accurate and the image is sharp. Here is the video, downsampled from 4k to 1080p:

I had some audio issues:  forgot to switch off the auto gain in the camera, which pumped background noise when the talent wasn't speaking. The audio was set to the lowest, 1, to avoid using the internal pre amps. The external mic was set to provide a hot signal.

My only concern regarding the future of the Nx1 are the batteries: the ones I have (original ones) are getting really old and I worry they wont hold a charge in the next couple of years. The new third party batteries are really crap... dead in less than a year. And they aren't available any more on amazon.

Will ride the camera till it dies.

Currently I'm looking at the Sony A7 4, should I need another camera.

1.40 firmware or 1.41?

version 1.41 installed on both of my Nx1's.  I also have Otto's Hack installed on the second one to break the 30  minute limit recording. The hack tends to lock the camera up every now and then, so I may uninstall if some important assignment comes up.

Why no exposure stepping/drifting? What settings/profile did you use?

Issue with exposure pulsing/blooming when recording video

"I have had experience with this exposure problem. After reviewing many forums on this issue, I decided for myself that it's all about the latest firmware 1.41. This firmware solves problems with communication with mobile devices, but the exposure jumps. If you go back to 1.40, the exposure problem should go away, but there will be problems with wireless communication with devices."

I thought that shooting in either A or M prevents this problem.  In my experience it's the changes in aperture that cause the exposure jumps.

Great video, loved it!

My family and friends also do fossil hunts. Our favourite haunt is the Jurassic Coast in Dorset. Lyme Regis and it's vicinity being especially good.

Our finds are simple finds in the shingles. We've never managed to identify a nodule to extract a specimen like you have shown, so I always admire the skills and patience to do this sort of work.

Great hobby.

Regarding exposure drifting:

I could have sworn I saw exposure drifting while on video record (not on this video, though... on some earlier test shoots) and I went crazy trying to figure it out!

I shoot exclusively on manual only, and was surprised to see exposure drifting.

If it happens again, as someone narrowed it to firmware 1.41, I'll consider going back to 1.40

Glad you liked the video!

I don't know anything about fossil hunting or restoration, but it sounds like fun.

I accepted an invitation for the next hunt in the spring.

I take back what I wrote before. I'm seeing the 'pulsing' in all modes, even manual.

Also, if in A or S using the 50-150mm lens, when shooting video, pressing AEL crashes the camera. Anyone else experienced this? Screen freezes and the only way out is to pull the battery. Video file corrupt.
