800D dual-pixel single-point AF accuracy?
1

Is it just me, or the DPAF system focuses more accurately when the camera is held horizontally, rather than vertically?

I'm using an 800D in live view, and AF is set to a single point (or rather box, considering its size). It's mostly apparent when shooting (let's say) a branch sticking vertically out of the water. If the camera is held horizontally, AF will hit the branch (most of the time). If it's held vertically, AF will mostly hit the water in the background. The lens I used was 55-250 STM.

Considering the shape of the single-point AF box, does it actually mean anything? On my old 700D the box was vertical and a bit bigger. On the 800D the box is smaller, but laid horizontally on the screen.

One last question. Do all DPAF cameras rely solely on the phase detection method, or they employ contrast-based "fine tuning" as well (after the initial focus acquisition)? If they lack the latter, would it mean reduced accuracy in any way?

Yes, you could be right.

I think you are fine.

Considering the shape of the single-point AF box, does it actually mean anything? On my old 700D the box was vertical and a bit bigger. On the 800D the box is smaller, but laid horizontally on the screen.

I'm not sure but all my digital cameras work fine. IMHO.
