The skin looks smooth, and colors are pure. Not leathery, dry in any way, but healthy.

How it is this Merrill photo shot ?

The skin looks smooth, and colors are pure. Not leathery, dry in any way, but healthy.

Most of the skin is out of focus which is why it looks smooth with not much detail:

GIMP edge detection filter - black equals no edge equals out of focus,--

You can do nice portraits with a Merrill sensor. Here is one from the DP2M:

https://www.magezinepublishing.com/equipment/images/equipment/DP2-Merrill-4038/highres/sigma-dp2-merrill-portrait-from-raw-SDIM0080_1352285530.jpg

taken from:

https://www.ephotozine.com/article/sigma-dp2-merrill-camera-review-19831

However, this requires that your models have perfect skin - young female models with makeup or children with clear skin.

Any imperfections, marks, freckles etc will show up with unforgiving detail..

Also with the Merrill it is absolutely crucial to get the colour right, otherwise the models with look a bit sick (greenish) or leathery (too yellow) or sunburnt (too red).

For example, for my DP2M starting with daylight white balance I need to dial in -2G Green (= +2M Magenta) to correct for the inherent slight green cast and then -4Y Yellow (i.e. +4M+4C) to remove the yellow cast. So in total +6M+4C adjustments. That is my current default with daylight WB and that gives a normal looking skin tone - not too yellow and not too red. On top of that I dial down sharpness to -1 and chroma noise reduction to the lowest level.

didn't I share an example of a good DP2M portrait shot?

or are you just another one with no legs telling how to run?

Not sure what you mean but I just shared my personal settings how to get rid of the greenish-yellow look.

you can try it out yourself with your own DP2M, and let us know whether you agree.

Adriana, are you saying this was contrary to your expectations? I must say that in my casual portrait shots with the SD1M, this has not struck me as a quality. Detail, yes, but the other attributes...?

Ole, please resist the temptation to also give me a clip under the ear for not posting a shot My reply to Adriana was just meant to be "counter-qualtitative"

It looks great if you don't look very closely. Along her jawline and neck, you can see posterization and the typical magenta edges and blotching of the SD1. In parts that are well-lit, however, the camera does a wonderful job.

Re: How is this SD1m portrait photo shot ?

Indeed I was surprised, my impression is that the merrill sensor generation is criticized / disliked for rendering skin, that details are exaggerated like in a "contrast" "definition" filter, making the skin look dry and not fluid.

Some ideas been:

-to increase noise reduction in Sigma Photo Pro to maximum

-to use the color mode "Portrait"

-negative fill-light

-some say, always doing filters in post processing and post editing

-correcting colors with a color profile

Don't forget to set Sharpness all the way to the left ("lowest" setting).

There are articles about processing portrait photos from Merrill cameras.

Ted, I'm sorry to disagree with you, but it sure looks to me like most of the skin would be in focus. Just look at the hair that is showing as in focus in your image, and on the left side that hair is obviously behind her cheek, while the hair on the right side is obviously in front of her face, so in front of her cheek. It looks to me like the focus is perfect on her eye, making most of her cheek, nose, chin, lips, and some of her hair in good focus, but for some reason your image is showing mostly just some of her hair, lips, and eye in focus, when we know that most of her nose has to be in focus, because all but the tip of her nose is behind the hair on the right, and in front of the hair on the left. Most, if not all of her cheek falls into the same plane of focus, yet your image makes it look like neither her nose nor her cheek are in focus.
