Can't decided between X-E4 or X-S10

Hello,

I will soon have the opportunity to replace my X-T30.
Now I'm wavering between X-E4 and X-S10.

Entry with me at Fujifilm was the X-E2. Came from Olympus at the time with 5-axis IBIS. I loved the rangefinder form factor and didn't really miss the IBIS, but then there was no Fujifilm with IBIS anyway. 2 Years ago I decided for an update because I missed the tilt screen. Therefore, did notupgrade to a X-E3 but to a X-T20 or relatively quickly a X-T30. I love small and compact cameras. Currently I only have the 23mm f2, 35mm f2 and 16-50mm . Considering geetting the 50mm f2 soon.
Camera is mainly used for travel and trips. Mostly with 23mm f2. Wildlife, zoo etc don't matter at all. Other action like kids etc not either. Now and then a portrait. I still have an Osmo Pocket for filming, but a camera with IBIS could replace the little bit of filming, but is not a must.

Now I am again at such a quandary.
Actually, I was already totally on the X-E4, but the X-S10 has the IBIS and the better controls.
Since I'm not planning to buy another camera within the next 2-3 years, I don't always want to look at the other camera.
Operating concept is relatively indifferent to me. I can get used to everything or find my way.

So it's stylish, compact small camera against the more usable camera. Its heart against head.

That it is a very personal decision in the end is clear to me, but there may still be a few points that I do not yet have in mind.

Why not just keep the xt30 for a bit longer as see what's coming out this year. There's not much difference between the xt30 and xs10 other than ibis.

Choosing between xe4 and xs10...I'd pick the xt30 lol.

Hi,

Open question - what's wrong with your XT30?  Why replace it?  Assuming that's your clear intention......

Are you one of the many who'll need to buy the accessory base-plate, grip and thumb rest for the XE4? To me those things would make the XE4 ergonomics better, but then they offset the ultra-light weight design goal of the XE4. And are you going to buy a small flash? If you're definitely going to buy those accessories to make the camera more secure in your hand, and give you flash, then to me that bodes in favor of the XS10 where you get all those facilities built in plus IBIS.

And just a thought on IBIS..... I came from Pentax DSLRs (with IBIS) in 2014. I lived without it with my XT1 for seven years. So I'm not dependent on it. But last year, I bought the XT4 which has IBIS and I love having it back. It simply works. I'm not lazy - I don't see it as a substitute for a tripod. I still use tripods quite a lot, but IBIS is still great to have. Highly recommended!

A personal decision.... Enjoy whatever you decide.

Regards, Rod

I have now the opportunity to buy new, unfortunatelly not in 3 month or 6 or 12.

Also I would like to have Classic Neg and the new autofocus.

First one of the main reason of changing cameras was actually to go finally back to the rangefinder style like my previous X-E2. So first I was hooked on the X-E4.

But the IBIS and additional buttons on the X-S10 make the decision hard.

Actually I tried the X-E4 in a shop. Even without any additional grip it was ok. I guess I would get the Thumbrest perhaps as I also used one on my X-T30.

Unfortunatelly I can't get hold of a X-S10 anywhere nearby.

The only reason for the big grip would be that the Tripodmount would be in the middle as I usually use a Peakdesign plate for the capture clip and I usually have my strap fixed there.

and give you flash,

I basically never use flash

This is the point. I came before from Olympus with 5-axis IBIS.

When I switched to Fujifilm I didn't miss it really. But I guess it could be like with you. Once its back its nice to have...

Re: Can't decided between X-E4 or X-S10

Hi,

Another issue I just thought of is that you'd be moving from a central EVF in the XT30 to a left side EVF if you chose the XE4. Would you be happy with that? I ask because I'm left eyed and I'm not at all happy with left EVF cameras. You're expected to use a touch screen between your face and the camera. And you get nose smears all over the LCD. These things happen less if you're left-eyed shooting a centre EVF. Small points....

And of course completely moot points if you're right eyed.  Or left-eyed and don't care!

Cheers, Rod

If you shoot raw, you can easily get classic neg...not much difference with AF. Fuji will eventually update the XT30 for the AF I guess.

If you're a right eyed shooter then XE4 would be good if you always use the top dials.

IBIS is good too but the battery drains quicker on the XS10...also you have to get used to the PASM dial.

That's why I went withe XT4.

Try and handle both. The IQ is exactly the same, the build quality is mostly the same and if the rangefinder style and traditional dials are important then X-E4 is the one for you. Conversely the X-S10 is the one if you are happy with a PASM dial and IBIS.

I went to purchase an X-E4, tried both back to back with a selection of primes and zooms, and came away with an X-S10. The X-E4 is a gorgeous design (especially in silver/black like my X100v),  compact and seemed to be the one till I picked it up. I just couldn’t warm to it.

Without the extra cost grip/bracket it felt slippery to me and any size/cost advantage went out of the window once the grip was attached. I preferred my trusty X-E3’s handling even with its fixed screeen.

Handling the X-S10 was a real eye opener. The grip is fantastic, the ergonomics are excellent and even with a 70-300mm attached, it felt balanced and ‘right’. It is a delightful camera.

Both are superb cameras and the choice between the two is a personal one. I read all the reviews, Mirrorless Comparison and Maarten Heilbron amongst many, and though I am a diehard FujiFilm traditionalist, the X-S10 has truly surprised me with its combination of compact size, weight and X-T4 innards.

Had a X-E2. No Problem at all with the viewfinder

RAW and jpeg. But I don't like the workarounds with renaiming exif and so on.

Fujifilm will definetly not deliver a softwareupdate to the X-T30 because the made the X-T30 Mark II with exactly these updates.

Re: Can't decided between X-E4 or X-S10

Love my silver svelte X-T20, but have bought an X-S10 and am evaluating. IBIS and grip are the draw cards. And they’re both very nice features for my usage. My unstabilised lenses just gained 5 stops of grace. The 70-300mm is now nice to handle. I actually like the flippy screen, don’t mind PASM, and it’s essentially the same form factor and only 100g more weight. I’ll likely sell the X-T20.

i was in the same situation last year when looking to upgrade my x-e1

the x-s10 is the best value for money fuji camera objectively speaking. i knew i wanted to eventually put bigger lenses on the camera such as the 16-80 and the 70-300 so a proper grip would be mandatory. an x-e4 with the grip and thumb rest would have brought the price up to exactly what the x-s10 was and in addition the latter has ibis and a more usable screen for me (i missed the flippy screen on the canon 70d when switching to the m5 which only had a tilt screen)

i went for the x-s10 and don't regret it one bit: handling with the 16-80, 70-300, 85 1.8 is superb. ibis together with the 70-300 is amazing...i get sharp shot at 300mm at 1/8s

if the rangefinder style is a must then there is no discussion here. if the traditional dials are a must, again, no discussion (although the x-s10 has more dials and can be fully customizable). if you only want to use smaller lenses, then the x-e4 with a thumb rest might be enough

Well lenses are ususally more primes (Fujicron) and a Standardzoom like the XF18-55 or XC16-50.

I don't do wildlife so nothing like the 70-300 or so.

Its the thing.

X-S10 is the best value for money, has IBIS and more controls.

The X-E4 is the stylish sister with the good looks.

then go for the x-e4. that 16-50 is a featherweight and a real performer. i had it on the x-e1 and really liked it.

a camera that you like to look at will also inspire you to pick it up and use it

I usually like to get the most out of my money, which would lead to the X-S10. Don't get me wrong its also a sexy camera, but the X-E4 is sexier and except form factor, controls and IBIS the image quality and possible settings will be the same.

Get the X-E4. If you think the X-S10 is slightly big, you'll be irritated every time you use it. It's more of a DSLR design so every time you take it out of a bag, the hotshoe will stick somewhere. It's irritating. With the rangefinder design, you don't have that problem.

Even better - save all your money and use what you have. It's always great to live below your means.

The additional buttons would be a non-issue for me, user interface of the X-E4 is not that bad in my experience. But, of course, that's a personal decision. You may check how many buttons you are using on the XT, and check if you could customize the XE4 accordingly. That's what I did before purchasing.

IBIS is a strong argument, however, it doesn't help in some situations like kids or pets - as soon someone moves around, the benefit of IBIS is gone.

Don't judge a camera purely by its spec. Judge it by your own usability. IBIS is nice, but do you really need it? Since you started your photography,  how many time did you tell yourself "had my camera had ibis I would have gotten this shot"? I had the exact dilemma that you're having now and I decided to go with the XE4 purely because I like a rangefinder style camera. I know the XS10 is more capable but I don't think it will be a camera that I want to carry with me all the time, unlike the XE4.
