Upgrade suggestion from Stylus 1

Re: Upgrade suggestion from Stylus 1

Guess I'm a traitor also. I have a Panasonic ZS100, and it is what I consider a contender for the Stylus 1. But it has a 1" sensor which has some advantages over the 1/1.7" in the stylus. And I also have several small 1/2.3" sensor compacts, but not the one you reference, and use them and recommend them to others frequently also, but would never claim that I have found a 1/2.3" sensor compact that can compete IQ wise and handling with the Stylus 1. But also to second your recommendation, the availability of these cameras like the TZ90 you reference is much better and more likely to be available than a Stylus 1 and have more theoretical reach. I believe if one cannot find a Stylus 1, or a 1" sensor compact available for the dollars they have available, the 1/2.3" sensor compacts like the TZ90 should not be discounted as useless. Many are absolutely great. But in the context as an upgrade per this thread, not sure that would be the case. But certainly an alternative to. Add in edit: If I ever come across an FZ300 panasonic at a good price, I will probably grab it. I really would like to play with this one. It has the smaller sensor, but more optical zoom and still has the f2.8 advantage. I see some great stuff that has been shot with it.  It might be the competition for the Stylus.  Almost seems like Panasonic maybe stepped in where Olympus used to be in small longer zoom point and shoots. It's a shame, as I really like Oly, but that's corporate marketing decisions stepping in.

Yes, I once nearly bought a Panasonic FZ200 and I guess the 300 is a development. But it is a huge camera compared to the Stylus1. If I really want to carry a camera as big as that, I would just bung an appropriate lens on one of my Oly OM-D bodies. For me the advantage of the Stylus is that it is such a small package. But one of the chaps in my aeromodelling club uses a Panny  FZ200 and gets excellent results. The camera is far to big to be called a compact. I have a Stylus1, a Stylus1s and a complete and excellent non-working Stylus1 that I can use for spare parts, so I am well sorted with compact cameras!

Re: Upgrade suggestion from Stylus 1

Sounds like you have it covered for now at least.  I have just recently picked up a Panasonic ZS100 which is taking some of the wear and tear off my Stylus, but not yet replacing it, just helping it, but no spare Stylus 1 unfortunately. Noticed your comment about aeromodeling - one of my other major hobbies. - Small world isn't it.  Are you involved with RC, or some other form?  We are having a terrible year so far this spring and early summer. Either pouring down rain, or wind blowing and gusting like we don't normally have this much of.  We've been having winds in 15-20mph range with gusting up to 35-40. Glad I've got my cameras to play with in the meantime.  Have a good day.

I have been an aeromodeller since 1954 when I was 14 years old. In the 1960's I flew c/l team race for a few seasons. I have tried most disciplines but for 14 years I flew r/c gliders in the national soaring leagues. I flew free flight vintage for many years using my own built replicas of spark ignition engines. Right now and for the past 15 years I fly mainly electric r/c thermal soarers but for a bit of a change I have a few foam electric power models from hobby king. I was also a founder member of an international group of model engine researchers/builders and I have built almost 50 motors from scratch including making my own castings. End of modelling life story.

Re: Upgrade suggestion from Stylus 1

So far I have found no upgrade path for the Stylus 1.  things I would like added are a lens that starts at least at 24mm, in camera processing for HDR, and in camera stitching of panoramas.  All other features to be the same or vey similar.  Anyone know of a camera like that without going to an interchangeable lens camera?

Thanks

John

It's a tough act to follow, isn't it?  I have put mine  in a drawer more times than I care to count and always end up getting it back out and into the active file.  The only things I see close are some Panasonic models, but see you have a ZS100 as I do also, so you are likely more up to date with what they have than I am. Good luck and if you find it, let us all know please.

Panasonic TZ90. Longer and wider zoom than Stylus1 starting at 24mm and it has Sweep Panorama. It also has an EVF.  Not a constant f2.8 lens but a very nice solid camera. That would be my choice if I didn't have a stock of Stylus 1's

Yes, real tough.  The TZ100 is almost there, but the lens, the lens, the lens....., and no in camera HDR.  I too have put down the Stylus 1, even though I've not had it long - but I keep reaching for it.  Duh.

Peace.

OOPs.  The TZ100 does have in camera HDR processing - doesn't seem to do much, though.
