Same situation, different lenses, what's going on??

Re: Defective?

I could try it on my old FM-2, once I replace the meter battery, buy film, have it developed and scanned.

The problem with trying it on my D90 is that the metering doesn't work on this lens.  I guess I could get the exposure using another lens?  Anyway, I think I'll have time to take some test pictures later.

Re: Defective?

A lens is a lens and a camera is a camera.  With a long lens like this there isn't matching of the one to the other.

Yeah but to determine the problem, first the lens has to be tested on a good known Nikon DSLR camera not a Fuji mirrorless (with) some adapter on it.  If the OP's D90 is defective as well then that's not helping either and you will be going around in circles frustrated.

The only difference between this lens on a Fuji and this lens on a Nikon is the adapter. The lens will not by some magic change it is optical properties just because there is a different body and senor behind it

All I can say is that I have done similar things using similar adapters and the image quality looks like garbage.  Is not the same thing

Well, I have been usign different adapters and some of them did this - but not always. It depends on the light and the f-stop. May be it is not the adpater (though I strongly suspect it is). But it certainly is not something that would change just because there is a different camera behind the lens. But the OP is going to run some tests and we wil soon know more.

To the OP - check this thread out (Re: AWB and aperture/shutter speeds) some great examples and discussions there - https://www.dpreview.com/forums/thread/4257282

More tests.  Fuji lens (sorry for the blink):

Nikon lens with no tape inside the adapter, filter on:

Nikon lens, no tape on the adapter, filter off:

Nikon lens, filter off, tape on inside of adapter:

Conclusion:  the haze and lack of contrast was probably caused by the filter.  It's much better without the filter.  Taping the inside of the adapter doesn't seem to make an appreciable difference, although it was a quick and dirty job.  It was too cold to fiddle with a tripod to make sure the camera position was unchanged, so it's not a perfect comparison.

Problem solved Contrast from that lens seems to be on the low side, thoug. Did you shoot wide open again? More contrast stopped down?

Wide open, just trying to duplicate what happened a couple of days ago.

If I'm using this lens, it will be wide open or close too it -- I only use it as a portrait lens, and I want to get that smooth background.

He's only a couple of feet at most in front of that evergreen and it's already completely blurred.

Re: Defective?

It would eliminate reflections in the adaptor, but nothing more.

So not the adaptor but the filter.

So bin the filter and the tape.

Why isn't the Nikon series in focus, just quickness?

Probably user error -- the depth of field is pretty narrow at 105mm (155mm equivalent, I guess?) and f/2.5, and I was just looking to make a quick compare.

Plus, it was really cold outside, so there could be some movement on my part or his, and I may have leaned in or out after getting the focus done using focus highlighting.
