I upgraded to the R5 and sold all my old MF35mm and Canon EF gear to afford getting on board the RF bandwagon.

The 14-35 is great for me as it is sharper than my EF equilivant,  lighter, more compact, has IS (brilliant), has 77mm filter thread - same as 24-105 F4 and 70-200 F4 (which I also have).

Lens is hood is weak.  Mine broke inside my camera bag (not dropped)

Ultra wide angle photography is much harder to get right than I thought.

Any shortcomings of this lens is my ability.

there was no ef equivalent.  which ef lens are you referring to?

Most likely referring to the 16-35 f4L. Which would be the closest EF lens to the RF. I have to agree that the RF lenses are generally better than their EF counterparts. Greg

Re: It's OK

be could be referring to 10-22 or 16-35L II who knows.  the 14-35L is the first canon 14mm that takes filters.  there is no predecessor

I’ve read the reviews.  It looks good, with a little weakness in the corners at 14mm, which is to be expected given the geometric stretch required. I own the EF16-35/4 and it will be hard to better this optically. However the EF16-35/4 is huge mounted on an R body with an adapter, and now I’m used to the compact size of the RF 24-105/4L and RF70-200/4L this is a real annoyance and so I’m seriously considering the 14-35.  As this is primarily a landscape/architecture/travel lens for me I have no need for f2.8, or the extra weight and expense of the 15-35/2.8.

It seems hard to get a good read on this lens. Some love it and some hate it.

Not to be rude, but this post seems to be a bit confusing.
