Hi everyone, first review I post here. I was looking for a simple point and shoot that would give me good results for a reasonable price and I purchased the Canon PowerShot SX740 HS and here is the summary of what I learned from this little camera.
This camera is fast, from the first moment you press the power button the lens pops out and it's ready to go, takes the same time (give or take a few milliseconds) to open than an expensive $1300 point and shoot and taking pictures is fun.
One of the things that impressed me the most about this camera is the color, it is absolutely incredible, I never had to edit my photos as pictures came out beautiful.
Unedited except for cropping and text.
The only problem is detail, I like to see good detail, defined lines and smooth textures but for some reason this sensor adds yellow spots across the image and doesn't really bring out the textures UNLESS you are using the full 40x optical zoom. I tested this indoors and outdoors with the same results.
Unedited except for cropping and text.
Here's one with 40x zoom, great results:
Unedited except for cropping and text.
I didn't do an in-depth review but focused mainly on my needs, I wanted a camera that I could carry everywhere and would give me great photos without correcting them, unfortunately the lack of detail cannot be fixed so this camera (as much as I enjoyed using it) is a no-go for me. I might explore the possibility of getting the Canon G7X
One notable difference from other cameras is that in low light situations whenever there is a glowing sign or a screen in the background, this camera always seems to get the colors right without overexposure or glow.
PROS:
- Phenomenal zoom quality
- Great colors (skin, sky, reds, screens, etc.)
- Interface icons and menus are user friendly
- Transfer to smartphone is easy and fast.
- Decent 4K video
- Outdoor photos are great.
CONS:
- Noise and lack of detail on low light situations.
- Low image quality compared to other 20MP cameras
- No viewfinder
- Slight image noise on 4K video
- NO RAW format (I couldn't find any option for this)
- Indoor photos I recommend using flash.
If you are on a budget this camera could be great for you to take outdoor photos, but remember you get what you pay for, I only wish that the sensor was better.
