Re: M100 to M50? Worth upgrade?

Pretty sure that wasn’t a C&C request on the sample shot. Just a quick example of a speed light bounced with a diffuser being a better solution in low light many times.

The thing I like about the speed light solution (with bounce and diffuser) is you can avoid those annoying silhouette shadows from a built in flash.

So to the OP, by virtue of it having a hot shoe, the M50 will help.  But then there’s a learning curve to using a speed light.  You can adjust the output.  You can do cool things with fill flash using high speed sync when you want that nice backlit portrait.  You can do cool things with light trails using second curtain flash.  Fun for the kids writing with sparklers after dark.

I don`t think it is front focussed, the platter and the eyes are more or less at the same distance, just look at the eyelashes, I think they are in focus. That`s where I put the focus point.

And that is the problem

I just wanted to show that a fast lens is not always the only solution, especially with 2 or more objects not at the same distance there might not be enough DOF .

Half of your depth of field is in front of the nearest child and is wasted.

Check a depth of field calculator. At near distances, it’s generally between 30-70 or 40-60 weighted toward the front of the image. Not 50-50.

Call this 10 ft with a 22 mm at f/4 and 27% of the depth of field is in front of the plane of focus and 73% is behind. Just random numbers for an example.

Looking at it again, assuming 6 ft distant at f/4 using a 32mm and you’ve only got about a foot and a half to work with total depth of field anyway.  Better off at f/8 with the speed light.  Gives you closer to 3.5 feet.  Roughly.
