If you want a smaller DSLR camera with a little less features, choose the Canon SL2 (200D) camera.  I can't remember exactly what those features are without researching it, but that is what I remember.  They are both about the same (except for size and weight).  I chose the Canon T7i (800D) camera and then bought additional ones after finding how much I like it.  The Canon T7i (800D) camera is a little better (at least that it was I thought was best for me).

The Canon T7i (800D) camera was advantageous being bigger when used with my very large Tamron 150-600mm lens (although I don't know for sure...just my perception).  I wanted something that felt comfortable in my hands.

Sue, congratulations. I bought more than one Canon T7i (800D) camera. I got them for low prices on Ebay from reputable sellers. I have to have multiple cameras with attached lenses. That's the way I have been taking pictures for years. I put the lens on the camera and there it stays forever...or almost forever.

It was from Ebay that I also got my Canon 18-135mm USM Nano lens for about $150 (USD).  That was a ridiculously low price.  It was used without one cap (from what I remember), but I've never seen one that inexpensive.  It still works fine, although it got a little snow on it from last night.  But I think it's OK.

What lens or lenses are you going to use with your new camera?

I think you'll find the extensive comparison of these Canonsat the CameraDecision Web site helpful in deciding — except that they're closely matched in so many ways.

Have you considered going mirrorless??  They are smaller, and many have excellent video, and photo capabilities.  Just a thought...

The Canon T7i (800D) camera is better, but a little larger.  For more details, you can see comparisons of both cameras on YouTube.

I have a T7 and I have had several SL1’s at various times.

I am pretty sure the T7i has more focus points than the SL2 and the T7, which may or may not be important to you.

All of the cameras mentioned require you to hit the +/- button and the shutter release button at the same time, to actually change exposure compensation.  I find it very difficult to find the +/- button with my thumb when my my left eye is looking through the viewfinder.  So, if I buy another Canon crop sensor camera,  I will make sure it has two dials.

I rented the SL3 for a time but ended up purchasing the T8i.  Like the slightly larger feel and more robust AF coverage.  Slightly better frame rate as well.

Have you considered the M50?

Lepewhi, I am not sure if you are responding to my post or to the OP. If to me, then yes, I borrowed an M50 from a friend not long ago. The combo with the 15-45mm was good but didn’t convince me to go in that direction. And it is a one dial design with a +/- button that I am not wild about. I have already started down the road of buying some EF-S lenses (10-18, 24 and shortly the 55-250). So the pieces are falling to place on the DSLR side of things. The next step will probably be a T8i or a well used 7Dmark ii. I think the Canon crop DSLR line is a very economic option right now and I can have some fun with it.  I went mirrorless on full frame (RP) and decided I wanted the option to use a DSLR some of the time.

Indeed, my response was for the OP, sorry about that.  I myself have never tried the M50, so nothing really about it, just what I've read.  But, I'm glad you are enjoying your gear, and good luck with your next purchase.

Happy New Year🥂

They are both fabulous cameras. Either camera can take beautiful pictures. Look up at the top menu on the DPReview site, and look for the cameras section. Then look for those cameras and you will see reviews and specifications.  DPR compares them here.

The SL2 is slightly smaller and lighter. It also has a slightly simpler layout of controls, with not as many buttons. This is a personal preference. Some people prefer fewer buttons; others want more buttons.

The T7i has many more focusing points. This is very helpful and more versatile for action, or for taking photographs where the main subject is not in the center.
