2022 - Moving to Sony Alpha and making NX line a backup, anyone else?
1

I was wondering, since it is not discussed a lot if big NX fans switch to another system or have done so... although the quietness on this board suggests not many are using the system so surely they left somewhere else... What have you moved on to?

Recent Black Friday deals have been so tempting. I have bought a Sony a7iii and a Lumix S5 with the intention of only keeping one. I will return the S5 but still not 100% on the a7iii (other than the fact that I got it for a really good deal - £1080 body only.)

I own 3 x NX1, 1 x NX500, 2 x GNX and almost all lenses in the NX system (bar 10, 20 and the older kit zooms) - some doubles. I have also added a Lumix gx80 for portability/ holiday shooter (love the evf that nx500 lacks and the ibis)

Bought a lot of my gear at really competitive prices and if I sell some doubles I get more than I paid for them so they end up paying for the Sony A7iii  (this would mean that the A7iii would end up costing me £300)

Still, I do not want to sell all my NX gear, I want to keep and use them especially in good daylight and for video as the file sizes are smaller than Sony's.

On purchasing the a7iii ...why? - I want the low light ability and high ISO performance, fast zoom lenses or primes similar to S line on NX from third party suppliers (example Tamron 28-75 f2.8) are now more affordable and generally the feeling of slowly transitioning into a system that is supported and for which lenses selection offering is evergrowing. I also want to capture fast movements of my child who will shortly discover running and for the future will look into earning money from photography.

Why not sure? - The Sony shutter failure fear, the fear of GAS - so many lenses so many choices and sometimes this also makes it harder when chosing lenses, or the fact that it could render my NX gear useless or forgotten in the cupboard.

Has anyone else invested in another system alongside the NX?  Was it a good move for you or do you feel  that Full Frame is not worth the extra?

I haven't moved away from the NX system yet, although I have added a Sony ZV1, which is very portable and better for video.

I was tempted to go for something like the Sony RX10iv and do away with all my NX kit, but I'm sure if regret it. It would also be an almighty pain to sell everything, unless I could find someone prepared to buy the whole lot!

Re: 2022 - Moving to Sony Alpha and making NX line a backup, anyone else?

...don´t know if that might help.

Just got me a NX500 in like new conditions (less than 1000 shutter actuations) from the big bay. First it was really cheap (less than 200,- €), second up to ISO 1600 there is no APSC camera which could hold up with it in image quality.

Not even the Pentax K3III or Fujifilm XT4 are any better.

https://www.dpreview.com/reviews/good-genes-samsung-nx500-review-posted/8

Check the coloured rings in the lower part of the test image and look at the red/blue circle. In the NX500 section, it is much better defined.

If you want a better image quality, you need to go for FF-sensors. Since I shoot mostly stills and dont care much about video it was a great snap for me.

Might be different for you,

Rudi.

When thinking of the pain of selling gear think of how easily you purchased your gear Of course there will be buyers even better if sold separately.

Regarding Rx10iv yes, you would have regretted that I am sure.

I went rather the "other way", investing in an NX (+adaptor) to support my old Russian r/f lenses, alongside my "main" Pentax APS-C DSLR system.

A full-frame body would be nice, both for the r/f lenses and my older M42 and PK lenses, so's I could get full use out of them, but it'd need to be cheap … maybe something with faulty a/f but otherwise working

Other than that, I've got just about everything covered from 10mm up to 500mm in PK mount, though being able to make full-circle fish-eye pictures with my 8mm Peleng again would be nice!

I still have my NX1 and S lenses but I bought the Sony A7III in 2018 mainly for the full frame look. I loved the rendering of the FF f/1.4 lenses, the low light performance in photo and video (big upgrade for high ISO in video) and the AF tracking.

However, I think the NX1 dynamic range is almost as good (more noise though), the NX colors are IMHO better with better brightness and uniformity, the NX1 sensor has really something magic ... And a big downside of the Sony A7 series is the IBIS. Yes the NX1 has no IBIS but the the Sony IBIS is really pretty bad, especially when compared with Panasonic or Canon. Also keep in mind if you buy the A7III and you're interested in video, you will only get 8bits and the full frame 4K at 25fps (30fps add a slight crop). The very bad IBIS along with the 24 or 25fps result in a very jerky image if you plan to use your camera without tripod or gimbal.

The NX1 is also sharper in video, there is a lot of talk about NX1 sharpness everywhere, I saw people said the NX1 was oversharpened and other said it was just resolution and not artificial sharpening. I used and tested a lot of cameras since several years and Im pretty sure the truth lies somewhere in-between. There is no doubt there is some sharpening added on the 6K image but I think it is added before downsampling and processed in a way to give the impression of extra resolution without a lot of moire, there is also a very agressive noise reduction fonction (sadly there is no way to turn it off) who give the image a very clean look. All of this with the still very good cpu inside the camera and the awesome colors (mainly blue and green) result in a very unique video image at lower ISO, subjects seem almost bigger on the screen than with other camera and really "pop" out of the picture. It is hard to replicate this effect with other camera because even 6K cameras use a different way of downsampling for their 4K modes. If you add more sharpening in video with these cameras, you will end with a very ugly picture, most of the time with false colors and moire. This is why the 4K video of the NX1 is still very special today.

The main selling point of Sony (IMO) is autofocus and lenses selection. I also have two Panasonic S FF cameras, the S1 and S5, and these camera are a joy to use compared to A7III and A7SIII. Focus is not as fast in video and the lenses choice is more limited but you get far better IBIS (a very important point for me), better noise reduction handling, better colors, better video log, high resolution mode, better ergonomic and more video modes like 6K and raw (the Sony A7SIII has 4K 60fps without crop and 4K 120fps though, but the price is higher and the sensor is only 12MP, the drop in resolution is noticeable even in video).

I'm slowly selling my Samsung gear. Have been using A7R3 as my main camera for a while and recently added an X-H1 (I can share EF lenses between them).

Re: 2022 - Moving to Sony Alpha and making NX line a backup, anyone else?

Right before the pandemic hit I bought a used A7R II and lenses with the plan to travel more and photograph landscapes. Then the world and my plans changed. In the last 2 years I’ve shot close to home and almost exclusively with my NX1 and 2 S lenses. I love the way they handle and the images I get from them. My plan was to upgrade to a newer Sony body, use the R II as a backup and retire the NX1 but I’m not sure that will happen anytime soon. I am going to sell a couple of my other Samsung cameras-NX500 and Galaxy NX-but I think the NX1 is a keeper.

Re: 2022 - Moving to Sony Alpha and making NX line a backup, anyone else?

Samsung NX never was my one and only system, but I still use the NX30, NX2000 and NX Mini with the slow zooms and the pancakes. It was an addition to the Nikon D700, more lightweight and compact when on the road with the bicycle, and it still is.

Nowadays, the D700 was replaced by a Z6, but FX lenses are still bigger and heavier than DX. Of the lenses, the 16-50 Powerzoom didn't take well to bicycle transport and got massively decentered, the 18-55 seems more sturdy.

This year I had to get new batteries for the NX30 and one of the batteries for the Mini failed. Luckily, batteries are still available. I'm really wondering, that the 8 year old battery of the NX2000 is still good.

You're right about the batteries, that's one component that will definitely fail over time.

I have 3 original NX1 batteries that seem to be holding up fairly well. Unfortunately, the original NX500 battery is hard to come by, although that camera is compatible with the batteries the NX1000 (and probably others) takes. I have some 3rd party batteries, but they're mostly useless. If anyone can recommend a good 3rd party brand that still produces NX batteries that would be great.

I moved over to camp Fuji a little while ago. I still have my NX300 and I still use it but it is very much a backup now. When I bought the NX300 it was a fine camera and I absolutely loved it. I would still be using it but it has degraded with use - red hue on the right side of images in low light and the mode likes to change itself randomly even when the mode dial is not touched. With the manufacturer leaving the market, and the available lenses being capped where they are, I made the jump since I wasn't heavily invested in the NX system yet.

I have a Fuji X-T3 with the 55-22mm zoom, and the NX300 with the Samsung 55-200mm zoom still takes clearer long-distance images even now. I haven't figured out if it is the glass or the body.

I'm still mad at Samsung for bailing out, particularly in the way they did it.

Ironically, my Samsung gear has been my primary system for some while and my Pentax system my back-up. It started the other way round. Today I just invested in more gear. A NX1 (I wanted a back-up to my only copy) and a few lenses including the 85mm which I've never owned. Looking forward to many fun years with my kit.

Caveat - for my type of photography, I don't need super zooms or very fast auto-focus. So sure, I understand why others are moving on. No shame in that. There's some great deals out there (Sony, Nikon, Canon and my favourite Olympus), especially in the used market.

PS - really jealous of the Sony lens choices.

Which other lenses did you get apart from the 85mm? I'm such a big fan of the 85mm, I'm blown away each time I use it, and sadly I don't use it that often.

Won this auction today.

The NX1 and 85mm were my main targets. The others were bonuses.

Obviously will have to check/test them when they arrive. Nature of the beast.

I saw that auction! Got a notification from Ebay when it was close to ending even though I hadn't been watching it. Ebay knows my buying habits!

Sounds like a nice deal you go there, you are going to love the 85mm I'm sure. And it's always good to have another 30mm - such a great lens.

Totally agree, especially about the 30mm. What a gem!

On a side note, on another thread I think I read that future battery sourcing might be an issue. Not stressed out about that but if I can get 10-15 years of still photography from my investment, I'll be over the moon.

Correction! This thread.

I am a Pentax FF and MF amateur type photographer. I did a trade a couple of years ago for an NX1 and NX500. I admit that I have not gotten enough use out of my equipment in the last while…but I am amazed at how advanced these cameras are and the fact they still keep their value. I was close to interrupting a conversation at a major camera store when a buyer asked the salesperson about Samsung and how their cameras were quite good. The sales person actually said that Samsung was not in the camera business very long and the cameras were at the low end. Bit my tongue and moved on.

I can only imagine what a Samsung DSLR would be like today if they’d if not stop manufacturing.

I purchased aftermarket on Amazon after reading the reviews. They seem to perform well. As long as I get at least 75% compared to an original manufacturer er battery then I am OK. For $30 CDN and a charger included could not go wrong.
