Does this lens on eBay seem trust worthy?
2

I’ve heard eBay is decently safe, but I’ve never shopped anything on there, and I’m wondering if this lens seems trust worth it. It’s a 300mm f/4 IS.

https://www.ebay.com/itm/393812601184?ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT&fromMakeTrack=true

I don’t think there are, but are there any other wildlife lenses I can buy for a similar price? Do y’all recommend this lens?

Sure the lens looks nice , but did you read the discription , read the title listing , and looked at the pictures ?

If you had , you might not be asking the same question .

The title of the listing is for a "Canon EF 300mm f/4 L IS USM "

The "IS" stands for "Image Stabilised" .

Now look at the pictures ....focus limiter switch , yes .

MF/AF switch , yes .

IS 1,2 or OFF switch ?

Nope !! It's not a stabilised lens .

The title of the listing is incorrect , the lens is the non stabilised version and is priced as such .

If it was the lens in the listing title you were buying , you would be paying much more .

.

So the question is , what lens do you think your buying if you bought it ?

The one in the title or the one clearly shown in the pictures ?

The listing has an incorrect title , a simple but crucial mistake , caused by the was eBay automatically fill in the boxes when your listing gear . The seller needs to pay more attention , and so does the buyer .

I'd be cautious with a seller of such low feedback plus they are in Japan, use PayPal and you've got a little protection.

All true and UG0400 serial # indicates 1992 year of manufacture.

If the OP buys it , he could still end up out of pocket returning it .

The pictures typically form part of the discription , as does what is written about it .

This is not an Image Stabilised lens that is what the OP is asking about as the title is incorrect .

Buyer protection or not , you won't be getting as IS lens regardless , as the lens clearly isn't one .

The OP does state it's a 300mm f/4 IS lens they believe they are looking at .

Neilt3's comments are pertinent, and UG0400 serial # indicates 1992 year of manufacture.

I think the IS lens came out around 1997 ?

Oh wow you’re right, thank you very much! I was about to buy it (tomorrow), but I didn’t realize it wasn’t actually the IS version. Then I’ll either buy one that DOES have IS, or a cheaper non-IS version, because there are cheaper non-IS’s.

I think I’ll buy this one instead then, I’ve checked and it does seem good enough, even though in the pictures you can see a bit of dust.

That's what you need to watch out for when there's different versions of a lens .

The random letters and numbers in the full name of a lens can be easily missed .

A few bits of dust doesn't matter , so long as it is just a few bits of dust .

Be sure it is just dust , as the Japanese climate is good for getting fungus growing in lenses .

I take it your happy with a non stabilised lens , as that's what you've linked too ?

If you have the budget it's nice to have a lens with IS , as it gives you more options .

True but I can’t afford the IS version rn, and I’ve read the non-IS one is sharper than the IS, I don’t really shoot video so I think it would be good enough. I shoot with my 75-300 at 300mm handheld most of the time, and it doesn’t have IS either.

But yes, I will check if it isn’t fungus. The manufacturer is a company so I guess it’s more trustable though, and they claim there’s no fungus.

I wouldn't buy the nonIS version, the EF platform is dead so why not wait a short time and get the IS version. I say the EF is dead but I am fully invested in it and it still delivers quality images for my clients.

Re: Read the description, look at the pictures!

To me it looks like a normally used 1993 lens. Unless dust is very heavy it shouldn't affect IQ, but I think I see some light scuffing on the front element plus something in the 8:30-10:00 area behind the front element. I feel the seller describes the lens in two different ways, 1: Condition: Used, and then [Ex+5]. With $60 shipping you are going to pay $479 for a lens sight unseen. If you are dissatisfied be their policy on returns is, 30 days returns, Buyer pays for return shipping. Merchants likely get a cheaper rate than we normal customers do, so U. S. return mailing could be higher. It may be worth looking at KEH, B&HPhoto and Adorama, they might have the lens for not much more than you are going to pay to this Ebay seller, and they are highly reputable.

That’s true, I would definitely buy it on b&h, adorama or keh, but sadly, there aren’t any 300mm f4’s on there.

I have the IS version I bought from MPB

I really like this lens. I traded for it earlier in the Summer with MPB and use the lens on my R5. Very fast AF and sharp.

I agree with others avoid this listing. Check out used sites and PoTN And FM Buy and Sell forums.

Hello...

I think this is a good deal - it is made in Japan and the seller has returns too.

Use PayPal - or what ever to buy it. IMHO- you are okay.
