Wireless flash Rebel T5 / EOS 1200D + EX550

Hi,

I appreciate this is an old camera but hoping that someone can help... I'm wondering how to wireless control a EX550 flash from a Rebel T5 (EOS 1200D). The EX550 flash supports optical wireless as either master or slave.

As I understand it, some of the Rebel/EOS bodies do support being a wireless master, sending IR from the pop-up flash.  The T5/1200D manual says: "Cautions for Radio Transmission Wireless Flash Shooting - Radio transmission wireless flash shooting cannot be set with the camera. Use the Speedlite to set the function.", but nothing about optical IR wireless.

If it's not possible to do this from the T5/1200D directly, I'm wondering if it will mount an EX90 flash that could then act as the wireless master. The EX90 has no buttons or display, its interface apparently being an menu in the camera. Again it's unclear whether the T5/1200D would support this.

Any help or suggestions would be much appreciated.

Many thanks.

Of course, I meant to say "Speedlite 550EX" and "Speedlite 90EX".

Here's the relevant page from the T5/1200D camera manual -

I think the "-" in the Built-in column means that the built-in flash is not capable of these functions. So the built-in cannot do FEB, zoom, or act as a wireless flash controller.

If you get the inexpensive 90EX to use as the wireless controller, you should be able to set it up in the [External flash func. setting] menu.

P.S. the 90EX cannot enable HSS in the remote slave 550EX.  For that you'll need a controller unit capable of HSS.

Thank you for that.

I'm also looking at the Canon ST-E2 transmitter and the Pocket Wizards (FlexTT5 & MiniTT1).  My assessment as follows -

The 90EX is a flash in its own right, but with no obvious benefit vs. the pop-up flash other than acting as a transmitter.

The ST-E2 is specifically a transmitter, but without a flash.  So I wonder what functionality it adds over the 90EX.

The Pocket Wizards would be suited for outdoor use without line of sight.

None of the above support HSS, High-speed sync. - which I just learned what it is, thanks ;).  I suspect anything that does this is likely to fall well outside my price budget for now.

None of the above support HSS, High-speed sync.

On further reading, the Pocket Wizards do support HSS.
