Fledgling photographer trying to take decent pics of wriggling baby I’m autumn afternoon light

Hi all,

I’ve been studying many, many Internet pages for the answer to the above, Aldo my camera manual, then bought a nifty 50 lens for my gifted DSLR Canon Rebel XR EOS 350D, bought a lens hood, cleaned camera, scrubbed camera. Played with it, loved it, took it out for dinner and wrapped it in cashmere.

Yet when I tried to do my own photoshoot with my wriggling 7 month old, very blurry pics. tried different settings engaging AF because I am going for the easiest option here and my eye sight isn’t great atm (long story). Read AF is excellent though to best use it on a wriggler.
what am I missing?? It’s quite bright here in the UK in the winter around early afternoon, so I don’t need a flash indoors. Switched from a 85mm to 50mm to get more depth but it’s still all out of focus. Seriously if she was completely still, great shots, bit that isn’t happening. Also like to take nature shots too and that has been a struggle.
I read putting the camera into av mode and half pressing the shutter button down first should do the trick but it didn’t. Please send help!!
I admit, I need an idiots guide here. I’m trying to do a little photoshoot for the grandparents, family and friends and we couldn’t, nor will get to do one professionally due to Covid. But it’s perfect opportunity to learn! But I need to get the cards made and off next week latest 😬😬 been weeks messing around with this.

You really need to include a photo that shows the exif info so we can determine the reasons.

First off I suggest the inexpensive, but very good Canon 18-55 for up close shots. Since you are new, set the top dial to Portrait and shoot away. I would go with a ISO 400-800 if it allows you. Heck, go with Auto and if the flash is too much, turn it off (if possible while in Portrait). Raise your shutter speed to 1/800 or more. Check out some youtube videos and you will be quickly on your way to some very good images.

Some good info here that a poster started last year: https://www.dpreview.com/forums/thread/4540088

Hope to see some of your keepers!

Yes my son Josh got this for his birthday gift.

Yes have fun with your camera... I suggest a Canon 50mm/ nifty lens to start out if you don't have one. IMHO.

Contrary to what you think, there is not enough light for your subject on a UK winter afternoon, although you can get a good picture of a still subject using a wide aperture, slow shutter speed and no flash, this arrangement is no good for a moving subject ... you definitely need flash and a smaller aperture (larger f number).

With more modern cameras you can increase the ISO to enable you to use faster shutter speeds in low light but the 350D doesn't perform so well in these circumstances and the best way is to use a low ISO but add light.

Such a little doll! I remember when my daughters were that age. Time goes by, so get the photos!

As suspected, your shutter speed is low, very low.  You might try Sport mode too as that will raise the shutter speed.

Thanks for posting the photos.  Definitely the shutter speed was too low, especially with a camera and lens combo with not stabilization.  Everything else looks good; the composition, colour tones, lighting.
