EOS Rebel T3/1100D/Kiss X50 Overheating
1

I own a Rebel T3 for several years now, been serving me pretty well as an amateur photography camera. One thing that has always been a week point for the camera is its video recording capabilities. It records only 720p 30fps and it overheats VERY quickly.

It never bothered me as it was mainly a photography camera for me, but now I'm getting into streaming and have been wondering if it is possible to use it as a webcam.

I did find out about the EOS webcam utility tool and it seems like it work. Now my main concern is if it will overheat as streaming/recording usually lasts for several hours and if it does overheat how much damage will it do to the camera.

I'm not too worried about damaging it a little bit as its already an old camera, and I know for a fact using a DSLR as a webcam does damage it. Is there anything I can do to prevent damaging it beyond repair? Is there a way to mod it to get better cooling?

Thanks in advance and sorry for the long thread!

The battery will be contributing to the heat, at least it does with my T3i. Try getting the battery out of the camera either with a grip or an AC adapter. I'd go with the adapter if you're planning to go for hours.

AFAIK, there's not much else to be done. On the T3i it helps to swing the screen away from the body, but it looks like your T3 screen is fixed in place.

I bought an AC adapter, it'll arrive tomorrow 😅 I hope it helps keeping it a bit cooler. Thx mate!

Nice to see another 1100D user out there!! My 80D was stolen a few years back so I took the 1100D out of retirement. I find it more fun shooting with it than the 80D!

Hope you find a solution to your problem!

It sure has been serving me well! It was my first and only DSLR, got it when I was in High School and it still rocks!

Was my 1st DSLR as well, wife bought it for me as a wedding present. 10 years ago!

Ya, the 1100D is ancient and basic, but in good light with a decent lense it can still turn out nice images!

Enjoy!
