Re: Tripod collar for new Canon RF 100-400

Aussie Coop;  Many thanks for posting in re this tripod collar for the RF100-400 lens.  I want this for use with the 100-400 especially when I have the 1.4X TC also mounted.  I think this will work well for moon shots too.  -- Just ordered one from Amazon.

Have to say I really can't see the point of one for the RF 100-400 - I don't have any issue with it with my camera mounted to my tripod, and I've not seen the need for a monopod with this lens. Very different to my experience with both models of the EF 100-400 L - that lens DOES need a tripod collar for sure.
In fact I find it one of the attractions of the RF lens - yet more weight discarded. I love being able to carry this lens when I wouldn't have carried the (wonderful) EF L II lens.

Just took an overseas trip, and used the RF100-400 almost exclusively with the R7 (and kept the R5 as my backup body). It worked great. I added the Haoge HG-R7 L Bracket to allow V+H orientation on a tripod or monopod. I agree that there is no need for a lens-mounted tripod collar.

Hi Guys,

Please, does anyone know any tripod collar that is compatible with the new Canon RF 100-400?

Many thanks

You dont need one The lens is very lite. If Canon thought you needed one they would have it for sale.

The RF 24-105 f4 L is 700G, 50g more than the rf 100-400.

Try this with the 2X teleconverter mounted on a gimble and then say that it doesn't need a tripod collar.

Bill I don't see any mention of the RF 2x the RF 100-400 or any R body in your gear list.  Hmm so you have tested this yourself?

I dont have the RF 2x only the 1.4X and that works fine.

Dave,

Over the next month, I'll be replacing my Fuji gear with the Canon R6 II and 24-240. For wildlife I'm considering the 100-400 or 150-500, both with the 2x TC. I'd prefer the lighter 100-400 but would need to mount it on my gimble. The body gets in the way.

I sometimes use the iShoot RF140 with the rf 100-400, works great. Never had a fit problem with my tripod/monopod setup.

That's because you've not used it with a gimble. The swing assembly is in the way of the body. It is possible to use a long extension plate but the leverage on body can warp the base plate. I'm probably stuck with either the 100-500 or the 100-400 EF. The Tamron or Sigma EF mount lenses are an option but for the AF issues.
