It doesn't have a groove for a collar, the barrel between the zoom ring and the AF/MF and stabilizer switches is 75.8mm diameter and 15mm from ring to switches, so not a lot of room there.  I've only ever used mine handheld, I'd use my 75mm Arca-Swiss plate on the camera tripod socket myself as the lens is only 700g including the JJC hood and a filter, so it's not greatly unbalanced.

For testing with my RF 100-400mm, I've used a telephoto lens support like this:

Indeed, you're right.....the lens is not heavy, but I would rather have an extra support. Many thanks

You dont need one The lens is very lite. If Canon thought you needed one they would have it for sale.

The RF 24-105 f4 L is 700G, 50g more than the rf 100-400.

Plus there is no section of the lens where one could mount a ring anyway.

If you use a collar with it, it would be unbalanced towards the body sticking out behind the tripod mount. My 24-240 is 115 grams heavier.

Interesting.

One downside: no rotation is possible with it.

Interesting, but owning a RF 100-400 from almost day one, I personally am lost on the point of this accessory.

It's the same problem with their Arca Swiss foot that clamps around the EF-RF mount adapter. Great for landscapes, not so good for panoramas with the camera in portrait orientation.

I think that lens is OK with just an extra long Arca Swissplate on the camera body, there's enough clearance.

I love this

Ya know Canon does not put a tp mount on the RF 24-240 at 100g more weight, damn you Canon

I did buy a lens hood for mine, but the lens is so light I just done see why if I  need a tripod I would not attach it to the  camera.

I use the 100-400 primarily for landscapes, a lot of long exposures, I haven’t tested how the lens performs just using the camera tripod mount though, so for me this could be something I’d use.

I could see it being useful with a monopod. Not that you really need a monopod with a lens that light during the day, but in low light it could be useful for overcoming the one-stop slower aperture.

Its light enough that you can just use an Arca plate on the bottom of the camera.

I've used it on a monopod/ballhead (wildlife) and a tripod/geared head (long exposure landscape) attached this way and its fine.

Re: Tripod collar for new Canon RF 100-400

I have the iShoot RF140 tripod collar for my Canon RF 100-400.  It fits nicely, around the three switches, and seems to be well made.  I use it as a better support for the lens when handholding for bird photos.  The only concern I have is that it clamps tightly to the barrel of the lens, and I wonder if the barrel (plastic) is strong enough.

Have to say I really can't see the point of one for the RF 100-400 - I don't have any issue with it with my camera mounted to my tripod, and I've not seen the need for a monopod with this lens. Very different to my experience with both models of the EF 100-400 L - that lens DOES need a tripod collar for sure.
In fact I find it one of the attractions of the RF lens - yet more weight discarded. I love being able to carry this lens when I wouldn't have carried the (wonderful) EF L II lens.

Just had a look at that -

https://www.ukhp.co/products/ishoot-is-rf140-tripod-mount-ring-for-canon-rf-100-400mm-f5-6-8-is-usm?variant=39630246084711

it seems well designed and nicely made with an integrated arca mount. I’m sure the lens barrel is strong enough. However it doesn’t rotate, due to the fixed position of the switch cut-outs. This is surely one of the primary functions of a tripod collar, to allow switching between landscape and portrait orientation quickly, or even allowing it at all (on a monopod for example).  I do have the RF100-400 and in my view it’s so light at 635g that it doesn’t need a tripod collar (lighter than the RF 24-105L).  In general all my wildlife shooting is done handheld, and if I use any lens on a tripod and need to switch orientation, I use my L-bracket.
