I remember the BBC broadcasts he refers to. There were only two or three and they promptly disappeared shortly afterwards. I never knew what they were called until now but was alway curious. Interesting effect but not broadly practical. I guess there must be some specific circumstances, perhaps viewing scenes shot sideways from a moving vehicle or train?

Thanks for posting that. I can now put it out of my mind.

Re: Pulfrich Effect

The Pulfrich Effect is used by eye doctors to test if one eye receives more light than the other - for example one eye may have a cataract. They would do the test using a pendulum. The the path of the pendulum would be seen as an elliptical one.

Here is a clip which shows the Pulfrich Effect very well.

remember to cover one eye with darkened glass.

Yes, that's a very good demo. (Closest spots moving to the right, central distance just slowly dropping down and furthest spots moving to the left -  to verify I've seen it correctly.)

I must try to think of some subject like a turntable for which it would be most appropriate.

I am currently playing with fake 3D using my old still 2D photos and 'painting' a depth map, (Xeye) thus:-
