Canon EOS M100 too much for a 6 yr old?
1

I had bought the original EOS M when it came out, then some years later got the EOS M100. Really liked the M100 + 22mm pancake lens as a pocket one handed camera. Then I traded it in for the M6 Mk I (not II). I like the handling of the M6 Mk I, but its not quite the same pocketable camera as the M100. Recently my daughter has wanted a camera, so I'm thinking of getting the M100 again, pair it with the 22mm pancake lens for her.

Would it be too much camera for a 6 yr old?

- Maybe one day I'll take a decent picture. In the meantime, I'll blame the equipment.

No. Your 6yr will need some guidance the instant feedback will also be instructive.  My eldest learned on my old Nikon F.   That took time since we had to develop and print.   He was about the same age.  Now he's really good, as is my youngest who also learned young.  Digital will be a faster learn. Go for it.

I don't know about child development and age, but does she use a smartphone or tablet? If so then I'd say the M100 is a great option. One of the few cameras that have a beginner interface and a focus on using it with the touch screen.

It would be a good option if you don't mind spending that much money, given that at that age kids generally tend to switch interests quickly and may not actually stick with it. On the other hand, in that case you get to use it. (Or is that your real motivation anyway? :-D).

In this day and age I'd just give her a de-activated Smart Phone.  This would give her a leg up on the competition at school too!  Then get her one of those little Zink (2" x 3") instant printers too.

Sounds like a great idea to help develop skills and deeper interest in photography, assuming she sticks with it.

But remember that the M100 is more fragile than a smartphone … I don’t know if they have any kind of case or protective wrap for it.

It be more about durability versus operation. I be more worried of it getting dropped.

Kids these days are pretty savvy with tech, especially if they are learning on zoom.

I gave my 7 yr old grandson my old canon sx10 and he had no trouble . Of course he isn't doing focus bracketing or messing with chdk and the like--but he knows how to use it to take images. On automatic mode or P - its a breeze.  Kids seem to be born these days with tech savvy already  in their brain . They just never heard of film.

I can only think the risk of destroy it or loose the interest. Otherwise in the country I live, I often see younger ones, even snäll children, almost babies in their barn trolley holding a smartphone, looking something like hypnotised, when their mothers look their own smartphone the social media. Young ones are used since very small age in technology. The question is if they respect the money needed to buy it.

I would say an old smart phone would be a better option.

IMHO - that would be a wonderful camera for a 6 years old.

Really up to you. There are both mature and immature 6 year olds, doesn't really tell us a lot about who she is as a person.

If you can afford it and think she'll be able to take care of it, I'd say go for it. I think it's important to expose kids to stuff early for them to learn and to not dumb it down or keep stuff out of reach.

Exactly.

It's certainly one of the simplest interchangeable lens cameras out there, with the touch screen interface and option of the simpler (or more informative) menus available, and the option of sliders to control the look in full auto mode - yet allowing full control in more conventional modes.

I own a water and shockproof Fuji XP camera, iq is kind of bad but I am fairly sure my little one has no way of damaging it.
