The first two images are exceptional, the remaining three are just merely very good (thought I better edit this in, the "merely very good" is a joke).

Also when two lenses are released, the faster of the two is almost universally deemed the "best." In Canon language, the faster 85mm (can't remember the speed) is clearly better than the Canon 85mm f18. Yet if you read the reviews of the 1.8, folks love it.

Were you shooting RAW or film simulation, if film - which one?

More editing in: Concerning background blur (bokeh), this for me is a critical element of a decent lens. Below is a link to the Fuji 50mm f2 photo page, could someone point out the poor background for me, I seemed to have missed this observation:

Cheers !! I got the more jok-ish tone hehe. These are all RAW edited in C1 using the Eterna film sim of C1 as a starting point (since X-T20 lacks that unfortunately) which i find really pleasing and easy to edit in night shots. More specifically I just use a layer for colors, usually yellowish for shadows and teal-to-green for highlights as well as the seperate color HSL depending on the image and then adjust the opacity of the layer. Eterna seems to respond the best for me. Probably with a camera that has Eterna and proper WB shift, it would be easier to eliminate editing.

As for the backround blur maybe my shots aren't the best showcase of this lens' bokeh hence EOS comment which I agree in a way, but as one can clearly see from the flickr link it is fine especially for flower close-ups.

F2 on APSC as I have seen in many reviews and comparison photos even at 50mm really doesn't compress backgrounds much and has very hard transitions and contrasty bokeh or out of focus areas.

Yes, faster apertures and their shallower DOF can achieve better separation from the background, but compression is a function of focal length, not aperture.

The blur comment (bokeh) was really in response to EOSGUY's post, I'll copy and paste below. My experience with the lens is that it does have very good background blur. There are some excellent examples of blur in the Flickr page I linked to. (Don't end a sentence with a preposition)

I'll be controversial and state that this lens is in a strange 'nether fish nor fowl' territory for me, just me personally.

It may have but it is So different from 56mm F1.4 and F1.2

See a review of XF 56mm F1.2 VS Viltrox 56m F1.4 and the Xf 50mm F2 for portraits section

It is night and day difference. No offense intended.

I had owned the 56 f1.2 for several years. It is excellent lens in many respects. Yet it usually stayed home.

After considering and reading about the 50mm f2 I decided to get it....even though I was basically trading my $900 lens for a $450 lens.

Glad I did...love the f2 and use it a lot.

I did almost the same thing. Sold my f1.2 as I was not using it and got the f2. The bokeh is really not that much different.

And I think that bokeh is way overused and over rated anyway.
