Back in December 2019 there were great Black Friday deals on the the Canon EOS R that was a little over a year old at the time. The two deals that were offered were

- body only for$1199 .00

- body and RF 24-105mm f/4L IS = $2,199.00

I believe both came with an included EF to EOS R adapter included but I know the version with the lens definitely did since that is the one I bought.

Why are current Black Friday prices for this kit at least $400 more two years later?
The reason I ask is I moved on from my EOS R at this point and sold it when I bought my R5 but wouldn't mind buying an EOS R to use as a backup. Yes an R6 would be nice but that is more than $1000 more.

Was Canon so desperate back then that they have no need to match it with a camera that is now more than three years old?

I guess there is still sufficient information demand for what ever inventory Canon has or can support. Also at $1600 there is still a spot in their line up that people want to buy at that level. The EOS R is a very nice camera if action if fps is not a demanding need.

It is actually very good as a family camera. 4k is just amazing compared to M50 and RP.

The 4k and HD video ability of the R is very underrated, IMO. Especially since it has DPAF available in 4k modes. I found the 4k crop to not be a big issue, and in some cases a huge benefit, because using the EF-S 10-18mm, EF-S 18-55mm STM and EF-S 55-250mm STM lenses I own mitigated most of its issues for casual use cases.

I totally agree.

RF 16 mm f/2.8 should be rather sweet for 4k crop, I will know when I get it.

I tried 24 mm stm ef-s on RP and it looked nice.

DPAF simply is nicer for a family camera.

Plus, these lenses gives a very useful equivalent range of 16-400mm for 4k video use.

It's a bad time to buy gear. It's a great time to save up for truly good stuff. GAS is completely irrational these days.

Very true. Inflation is kicking in hard across the board on everything from camera gear, to food, to vehicle parts, energy etc. IMO, much of this is a manufactured crisis. When people stop buying products that are not essentials like camera gear, the prices will drop. Until then, either step up and pay the price or wait it out. The only way Canon gets any of my money any time soon is to offer an APS-C RF mount camera.

People have stopped buying camera gear the market is shrinking every year.

I am referring to people who still have an interest in buying camera gear. I agree that it is a rapidly shrinking market but there still are people interested in camera gear.

I have sold 1 camera and 4 lenses this year, the used market is alive well at least, and this allowed me to justify the R and 70-300L.

EOS R demand has always been surprisingly strong since they dropped the price to ~$1700

R is kind of the new RP, RP has been insanely popular after it got to around $1000 and R at $1300 is more than enough for almost everyone.

I bought mine refurbished in winter 2019 I think for $2100 with the 24-105L and sold it for that much on Ebay this summer extremely quickly. I think there is a more general user base who isn't as persnickety as the avg DPR poster that really likes what the EOS R brings to the table............ at the right price

It’s because 2019 was one of the last great years. Now we are living in the upside down. 2020 was bad and 2021 is 10x more horrible. Ugh. I know what you mean, I would love to see those deals again.

In many ways yes, 2021 was even tougher for both people and business.

Not in northern Europe.  The democratic scandinavian model simply works.

So understandable that Black Friday deals were kind of anemic, especially for photography gears.

i got my R with basic adapter for 1999 Cdn in Dec 2019 at Henrys, and to top it off they had the rf 35 1.8 reduced to 350 Cad from 599 if you purchase it together, so I got a heck of a deal. when the R6 goes to the low 2k range is when i will pull the trigger, i'm not going to pay 2900+tax Cdn. for body only.

$1200 or thereabouts is my painpoint
