Lack of good EOS R deals for Black Friday

Back in December 2019 there were great Black Friday deals on the the Canon EOS R that was a little over a year old at the time. The two deals that were offered were

- body only for$1199 .00

- body and RF 24-105mm f/4L IS = $2,199.00

I believe both came with an included EF to EOS R adapter included but I know the version with the lens definitely did since that is the one I bought.

Why are current Black Friday prices for this kit at least $400 more two years later?
The reason I ask is I moved on from my EOS R at this point and sold it when I bought my  R5 but wouldn't mind buying an EOS R to use as a backup.  Yes an R6 would be nice but that is more than $1000 more.

Was Canon so desperate back then that they have no need to match it with a camera that is now more than three years old?

I feel there is a general lack of deals that showed in 2019 and before across the board, not just a specific camera model. I didn't see great computer deals, graphics cards, lenses, or other gadgets too. Perhaps the supply chain issues caused by covid are real?

The supply chain issues have been well publicized for weeks, yes they are real.  The retailers started what would have been typical BF sales at least a couple weeks ago in anticipation of not having the stock available now.

I felt the same way. But I still bought a EOS R. The RP was higher also 1199 with kit I bought mine for 1000 summer 2020. I was hoping for a great deal on a Z5 but no luck. It was a bad year this year.

I agree with the rest. The shortages seem to be affecting just about all companies and it explains the lack of deals. There's not enough supply.

I guess there is still sufficient information demand for what ever inventory Canon has or can support. Also at $1600 there is still a spot in their line up that people want to buy at that level. The EOS R is a very nice camera if action if fps is not a demanding need.

For weddings and events and portraits it is a fine camera

I got mine for $200 less that this year's price.  I think a part of it is the supply chain, and also, I think that, at the time, Canon was being fairly aggressive about getting their mirrorless system established -- building a consumer base for the future.  Whatever the reason, $1200 for a very capable camera with a great sensor was too good to pass up!

It's a bad time to buy gear. It's a great time to save up for truly good stuff. GAS is completely irrational these days.

Well if you got it for $1200 that is the price I’m interested in. Can you share where you bought it from?

I was curious to find an EOS R at a good price because, while I admit I have a full Sony set up with multiple bodies, I wanted to take a week long trip with my EOS R5 but I won’t do that without a viable backup that is also an RF based body.

That was the Black Friday price from B&H, in 2019.  So, literally, they had a better deal when the camera was newer, than they do now.  So, really can't help you now.

That said, if you already have a Canon camera, you could get pretty close to that price, by getting a refurb R, and calling in for a loyalty discount.

Supply chain issues make many R products scarce even at list price!   Why discount for Black Friday.  Now is the time to discount expensive EF lens particularly from Sigma or Tamron when excess inventory may exist ahead of their announcing RF mount lenses next fall.

Very true.  Inflation is kicking in hard across the board on everything from camera gear, to food, to vehicle parts, energy etc.  IMO, much of this is a manufactured crisis.  When people stop buying products that are not essentials like camera gear, the prices will drop.  Until then, either step up and pay the price or wait it out.  The only way Canon gets any of my money any time soon is to offer an APS-C RF mount camera.

In my market the R6 is discounted. This might cause a lower price for a used R.

The R is a pretty solid body. I wouldn't hesitate to buy one used.

Yes, in 2019 I also got my EOS R at thaat price but did sell it when I got th R5. Now I realize I should have held on to it to use as a backup. I hadn’t thought about a Canon refurb and the loyalty discount. I am a CPS member so I should look there. Thank you.

I agree. I owned a R but sold it when I moved to the R5.

I really doubt that you could get a BF deal of 1199 on a 2299 msrp R in 2019. 2199, would buy.
