Redmi Note 4 - Update OS

Hi All.

I have a Xiaomi Redmi Note 4. The OS was u0dated once some years to to the present:

"Android version ... 6.0 MRA58K"

Can I get it to update to a later Android version? It doesn't matter if it's an involved process, as I'm starting to get non-compatibility messages when trying to install apps. It's quite a suitable phone in all other ways, so I don't want to just go and get a new one - and face the same problem again later

Thanks,

Hello,

Yes you can, I did it with my Redmi Note 4 two years ago.

You cannot do it in an official way, you have to root the phone and install a "rom" (this is how Operating Systems are called in the smartphone nerds world ;-)).

The steps are :

1 - Unlocking the bootloader. You will find many tutos on the web for that. I don't remember precisely how I did it, but you need to ask Xiaomi to unlock it, and it can take 2 weeks before it's done.

2 - Once the bootloader is unlocked, you need to install an alternative recovery program called TWRP. Lots of tutos are available for this too.

3 - Now, you have to boot on TWRP and install a custom ROM you previously downloaded on internet.

There are tons of custom ROMS available, some are based on Android 7, some on Android 8, etc.

I tried several roms and my advice is to stay on Android 7 based roms for the Redmi Note 4, they work better and are more fluid.

All this can be done very easily by using XiaoMiTool :

Thanks for your comprehensive reply, Adoubeur. I will consider doing this.
