Anyone else notice that he's using expand spot/area and it's picking out faces and tracking?

Slight edge to R3, according to him.

I saw that when he posted his RAWs from the R3. Wonder why he is not using Human Eye AF?

He is. The R3 allows face/eye detect in any focus mode.

Yes, R5 should allow this too!!

You may well be right, but that's not what it looks like when you review the RAW files in DPP4. The focus squares are large blocks on the face rather than small blocks on an eye.

Correct, I didn't see eye detect going on, only face!

The problem is that it wastes time and does go wrong if you you use 2 button focus, as they are not linked and we fool ourselves if we think they are.

There should be just one focus button, with modifiers for spot size and turning of face and eye for more general tracking.

Well, the R3 looks to be much better, the A1 doesn't select faces here, its all subject based, so it's actually quite random, R3 looks as if its far more repeatable and dependable!

Thanks aftab

As a R5 user, I am hoping some of that AF will be available in the upcoming firmware upgrade.

Maybe. Some features are being added, but follow focus like that require added processing power. Not sure the R5 has the same AF hardware as the R3.

It’s always nice that things work in a way that seems most effective for our photography . I mind that issue less then yourself Mike, it would not deter me in itself

I thought that the R3 was using the same processor as the R5. Does the the BSI stacked sensor or lower resolution require less processing power that can be diverted to follow focus?

I don't believe that the processor in the R3 is different. It's entirely the sensor, which provides it's speed mainly. That's why I believe the focus update should give us very similar results. We'll find out next week. Can't wait!

Name the gear and I've probably owned it and used it.

I'd be very surprised if a high-res non-BSI/Stacked sensor can keep up with the sensor in the R3.

yeah R3 AF seems more advance than the A1.  Altho ,in his recent instagram story he mentions that the R3 shown flickering artifact from electronic board like A9 did while Sony A1 don't.

maybe he will explain this in his next video.
