Canon RP and 35mm f1.8 turning off behavior help.

Hi,

I recently purchased a Canon RP along with a 35mm f1.8. I'm running into an odd quirk and was wondering if anyone else is experiencing this.

In a nutshell, when my camera is in servo af mode, I focus and lock on something somewhat close (lens extended out), then turn off the camera. The lens does not fully retract (I have lens retract on power off enabled). Instead, it kind of slowly moves back partially.

The lens does retract as expected when shooting in one shot af. In servo af, i have to either tap the shutter (not allow the camera enough time to lock on something) before turning off or actually take the photo.

I have the same setup and use the RF35mm a lot of the time, but in one shot mode, I just tried in servo mode, and the retraction is identical after switch off.

I would suggest that there may be a fault with the lens, and you need to swap it for another one and compare.

Of course, if you bought it from an internet source, and have no access to another lens, I can see that would be a problem. But you could try going into Best Buy, or a similar common and impersonal big box store, with your camera and trying out some of their lenses to see how they react. The 24-240 lens comes out further than the 35mm.

I actually did purchase both the camera and lens from Best Buy, so this shouldn't be a problem.

I just find it odd because the lens retracts normally in every other situation except for the one specific one I ran into which made me think it was just a firmware problem.

But to confirm, you were in servo mode (I was also in eye af, but I don't think it makes a difference), half shutter focus and lock on something close (blue square), then turn off the camera.

I just did it again. The lens extended about 3/4“. I turned the camera off and after a second or so it retracted completely.

But when I tried a second time, the lens only retracted about 1/8“.

Third time was fine. Fourth time was not. Subsequent retractions were normal, though it takes 2 seconds before the front of the lens moves back.

I conclude that this might be a bug. But not one that I can duplicate reliably.

Let’s see if other can conduct this experiment.

A question: is your bttery fully charged?

I just gave Canon a call. The tech tried with the Canon R (someone had already checked out the RP) and was able to reproduce the problem with the 35mm. I asked if he could try a 50mm f1.8, but he didn't see it happening with that lens.

He said he would send in the bug for a firmware update. Who knows if anything will happen.

I just tried here again, and I can consistently get it to not retract. But just tapping the shutter button before shutting off the camera will always retract the lens.

The battery is fully charged.

Odd that youra fails every time, and mine doesnt. I will try with RF50mm.

RF50mm retracts perfectly every time.

Yes, very odd.

When mine fails, it just slowly retracts about the same amount each time. For instance, if the lens is extended out slightly before shutting down, it will retract fully but slowly. If the lens is extended out fully, and shut down, it will retract probably by the same amount as before but not completely and still slowly.

I suppose it might be stiction. How does it feel if you switch into manual focus and turn the ring to change focus?

Manual focus

I just tried manual focus and works as expected. This is actually the first time I paid attention to the lens in manual focus. I’m amazed that it is focus by wire. When I turn off, the camera lens retracts fully and quickly.

Also remember that the lens retracts perfectly in one shot af mode too. It’s just in servo af and focus was “locked” onto a subject where it fails to retract fully. It doesn’t make sense that it works fine in one shot mode but not servo.

As an aside, I just noticed that even when the camera is off, switching the af/mf switch will wake up the lens momentarily.

Re: Manual focus

Yes, even when these cameras are supposed to be turned off, the red light flashes when you do things...

Re: Manual focus

Where do you see the red light?

Also hopefully others with this lens can test for the lens retraction.

Re: Manual focus

It‘s just above and to the right of the trash can. With the RP turned off, take out the battery, and then replace it and the little red led will flash.

35mm f1.8

Ooh. I found it.. It's like a drive activity light.

Earlier, I tested the retraction, and occasionally it would retract fully despite the focus square being locked on the subject (blue). There must be another piece to this, but anyways I think a firmware update should fix this.

Since this happens with both the RP and R, it could probably happen with the R5 and R6. I wonder if I can change the title of the original post to make it specific to the 35mm f1.8.
