The Money Maker Of The Trinity

Everyone who does weddings and events knows that this focal length is their money maker and an essential lens in their bag. I would say it's no exception in my case. I was a bit disgruntled about shelling out the price of this lens but once I got it and worked with it it stunned me. I refer to it as "surgically sharp". I've seen a few other reviews from Youtube guys out there that apparently did NOT get a copy like mine. Aside from it's wonderful bokeh which is easy to achieve, the sharpness in the central 80% of the image is most often enough to make one shake their head wondering how it is possible. Focus is indeed instantaneous. There is NO play in this barrel whatsoever. It fits so very nicely in the hand and is amazingly light. I could walk around with this on my gripped R5 all day long with no adverse effect on my wrist. To me it is like an ounce of gold in my lens collection. In a pinch I can easily grab a wonderful portrait with a blown out background if needed. I feel Canon really did their homework on this one and made a sensible decision to make it have a extendible barrel yet lighter weight. Highly recommended.

Sample variation?

Extreme sample variation like this on a high end lens?  This can't be good.

Before I bought an R, I thought the telescoping design of the Rf 70-200mm f/2.8L was a gimmick, and that it would result in grit and moisture getting into the lens. After all, I was the proud and happy owner of the EF 70-200mm f/2.8L IS II, so the RF version seemed irrelevant.

Then I got the R and, despite the odd ergonomics and clunky AF tracking, quickly decided to ditch my 5DIV. I could see that the mirrorless bodies were going to quickly displace dSLR's.

Unfortunately, I found my beloved EF 70-200mm with the adapter was suddenly awkward to use on the R. It's zoom and MF rings seemed just out of place, especially in portrait mode. So, I took another look at the RF 70-200mm's reviews, including some longer term ones, and decided to swap.

It really is as good, as practical, and pleasurable to use as ProDude says!

Not all Youtubers know what they are doing, though some are consistently reliable, year in, year out.

As for "extreme sample variation," as another poster mentions, of course it's possible, but more likely are high impacts during shipping. Easy to drop a box from way up and have it land so that little or no damage is evident to corners. I think the shipping-damage factor is often glossed over by all involved because ordering online is the only option for many, many photographers at this point.

Fortunately, mine is "surgically sharp."

OK so I saw 2 people that grunted about it not being super sharp at the corners. Dustin Abbott can be a real butt head and is a major tweak. But even so his copy was nothing like mine.

One habit I adopted quite a few years ago was after a friend that worked for UPS and another rep I spoke to from FedX explained that if a person orders a product to be shipped "Next Day Priority" it get's handled very differently then anything else. it for one thing is NOT subjected to the deadly conveyor experience getting thrashed and dropped. Virtually EVERY lens (and we're talking probably no less than 15) over the years I've ordered exclusively this way, has arrived without so much as a smudge on the box. No dents, dings, rips, scratches....NOTHING but a perfect uncompressed box. The lenses have consistently been perfect as well not being subjected to all that thrashing, dropping etc. Just a thought.

I was able to get mine last December refurbished from Canon, which took the sting out of the price for sure.

I've been super happy with mine-it focuses much faster than the EF version 2 that I had, and appears to be sharper with a bit more contrast.  The lighter weight helps with all day events quite a bit.

I haven't been too worried about the extending design, haven't noticed dust infiltration or anything, and I live in rather dusty Colorado.  The EF 100-400 and 70-300L have been designed that way.

I'm so glad you've shared this.  I only figured it out early last year, after many years of frustration with "super saver" free shipping.  Especially, I find now, with FedEx, it's like a completely different company delivers the overnight packages.

I came to the conclusion I'd be nuts not to pay an extra $20 or so when buying expensive camera gear.
