SD1M - What's In The Box...?

Guys, it's been a while since I saw the box, and I'm trying to remember if there was supposed to be a cable to connect the camera to the power supply.

Ta.

Nope, sorry to disappoint. It's an accessory, SAC-4 - if I recall correctly.

Ta, Ted. That was fast.

I looked it up:

https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/1023875-REG/sigma_eya024_sac_4_ac_adapter_for.html

and balked at the price - AUD or USD it's still ALOT.

I had some notion that "they included" some flat, battery-shaped gizmo that slid onto the battery charger and which had a cable that plugged the camera... - But that must have been for some other device.

Well, I'll see what the local Crake's have got.

If you're wondering why, it's to maintain power to the camera to retain date/time/other settings while swapping out the battery. Yes..., it loses all that again - alas! It'll be another trip to Japan in the new year - alack!

How much should it cost? Have you seen the price of Sigma batteries for the SD1 Merrill?

atom14,

With the PG-21 battery pack attached I swap out one battery at a time with my old SD15 & that holds the time, date etc.  You could do the same with the PG-31 on the SD1M.

Scotty, I'd be ier if it cost in AUD the face value of the USD price, but I'm saying it's just a power-pack.

S. That is a good idea, especially for in the field. Sure it would add bulk to the system, but... For about-the house/town use I think the power supply would be handy as well. So, that says I should look to getting both.

Now at some stage I guess I'll have to send it off to Sigma Japan again. - The 2nd time in about 2 years. It's a cheap enough repair at about 110 AUD, but only 2 years???!!! - A let-down, TBS! And it was a 2 month turn-around then, so who knows now...

Idea: look into some cheaper power-supply option from the local electronics store. It's just the pin configuration I'm not sure of.

Maybe someone here can measure their SAC-4 pin diameter and take a macro shot? And measure the voltage to find out the pin polarity but remember that the open circuit voltage could be considerably higher than the on-load voltage. It's unlikely that the SAC-4 has the best regulated voltage on the planet especially if the camera has a regulator inside.

I myself would be leery of taking any advice from the local electronics store. People like Tom Schum here can help much better, I reckon.

An alternative is to get another fully functional camera and keep this one as a back-up, as I have done with the SD9 so as to have two battery carriers ...

Both good points, Ted. The output voltage and current is listed on the specs of the product, but the pin dimensions are not. - And from looking at the camera, it's a veritable* pinhole in size.

Ta in advance to any obligers.

I paid 29 USD new from Sigma. If I would sell it for 70 USD I would feel not good.

atom14,

I reckon any power supply with an Input of 100-240V, 50-60 Hz  and an output of 9V......3A would be ok.  The connector is a standard 3.5mm with a centre of 1mm.  The centre is Positive (+).

Great job, S, but a slight caveat.

At 9V, the in-camera regulator would get warmer than with the Sigma SAC, especially significant if the regulator is of the analog type and not pulse-width modulated.

Boring Ted-numbers for, say, 1A @ 5V after the regulator:

((9-5)*1)/((7.5-5)*1)=over double the heat dissipated=over double the temperature-rise ...

S, it seemed to my eyes that the socket on the SD1M was much smaller than 3.5mm. I do not have my camera as I am away for a week, but I'll have a good look when I get back.

I think I'd just get the Sigma model. I think it's worth the extra money to be sure you don't fry your expensive camera with a cheap power adapter that you plug into a wall outlet, which can output a lot of power. I've seen cheap, junky electronics do really bad things. Sigma has pretty strict quality control. I wouldn't be surprised if they test the power output of all their power adapters, when they get a shipment from the factory in China. Will you do that? Will the cheaper power adapter you buy continue to output the right amount of power through the years?

Scott,

I would test the output of such a device. I would get the "real thing" if avaiable at a reasonable price if I wanted one, which I do not. I did have ones for the SD 9  &  10 which I use occasionally to power them up up. Nostalgic use.

Guys, I just had a thought...

Well, make that "the other day", but it was fleeting and it got lost in the subsequent information:

Since the output of the SAC-4 adapter is 9V, 3A, do you think that, for the purposes of maintaining a bit of power for a few moments of battery change over, I could use an adapted 9V battery (or a few in parallel)?
