To all gadgeteers...

OK, so I've just had a couple of unsuccessful attempts at photographing the sun today (sigh)! I'm using the SD1M+50-500DG OS + 2X converter + 100,000X density filter.

The trouble is that the 2X disables AF on the combo, and I want the larger image.

I wish the SD1M had live view!!!

It's so dim trying to judge the correct focus with this set-up, unlike with the moon at night. So is there a ready-made gadget that I could perhaps slip over the viewfinder and get a magnified view of the image (edge of the sun in this case)? I don't want to re-invent wheels if there's one about.

Thanks, and here's hoping that the next Sigma camera will have live view. (Yes, the Quattros do, but not them.)

Re: To all gadgeteers...

The sdQ has live view, and so have the fp series cameras.

But for photographing the Sun, you should be able to use a manual focus lens, well stopped down and set to infinity.

What I have mostly done is to find where I think focus is & take multiple image, just before to just past focus & select the best & delete the rest, simple, works for me.

You might check out Sigma Capture Pro. You can hook your SD1m up to a computer and get a live view that way.

Remember that the SD1M LCD is "only" 460,800 dots which is only 153,600 pixels (480x320px). So magnifying that may not be satisfactory for your purpose.

Ta, Guys, in general...

1. Don: Woe, that the SD1M (and others) don't have LV. The view is so dim thru the VF, and my sighting position so contorted, that I might as well be scrubbing beneath a floor.

2. 'Tog: I usually don't need to take multiple shots, and when it doesn't work it's ann ying. Of course, if I wanted a smaller image, the AF without the 2X converter would be crisp.

3. Jeffry, are you saying that SCPro gives an image beFORe shooting? I thought it was only after. If the latter, it would be no good to me. Could you please confirm.

4. Ted, I'm trying to  magnify the real image thru the viewfinder, not the back screen.

I know that I can hook up the SD1M in playback mode to a TV via HDMI, but I've yet to try if it sends a "live" feed in shooting mode. Of course, I doubt it would work.

So, an optical aid to clip onto the viewfinder, or a mini-camera to WiFi to the phone. Of the latter, I can only find very wide angle ones, so basically useless

To reiterate, this is to provide a solution for the SD1M (and would be applicable to the SD9~15 range).

Don't we all then I'd own only one camera

With my sd Quattro h, it streamed prior to the shot. I think this is typical of tether applications.

You mentioned the HDMI option. You can capture HDMI and stream it via USB. (There are devices that are HDMI on one side and USB on the other.) You could connect that to your computer and watch as if it were a web cam.

You can also connect this to your smart phone via an OTG cable and use one of several apps to view the stream as if it were a web cam. I have done this with the sd Quattro H so I could have a quick and dirty field monitor. Beats lying down in the mud. I did this on Android and have no idea if it works on Apple, but I imagine "there's an app for that". Even if Android, your device has to play well with OTG cables and allow this kind of thing. Mine happens to so it works for me.

Aha - I used a Tenpa 1.34X on my SD1M and still have it on the SD9.

On the SD1M I had to move my eye around to see the whole view but it did help with manual focusing.

No such problem with the stupid "Sports" viewfinder on the SD9.
