Next X100*

Getting older means for me getting lazy to take my good camera when traveling, taking more photos done with iPhone... Thinking to give up lovely but big full frame Canon R with 35mm to compact and stylish x100. I already touched one, gave to my daughter x100T for b-day few years ago. I like rangefinder design and simplicity.

So, questions... What do you think about upcoming X100 version? What to expect, reasonably? I would like to see full frame sensor but looks unrealistic. I would love to see native b/w sensor but looks not-even-dream-about-it. Better lens? Better sensor? Titanium alloy body? I appreciate any opinion, shared

Flat body X100VI?

Fujifilm hasn't FF product.

I would love to see native b/w sensor but looks not-even-dream-about-it.

Only possible if someone ask Fujifilm form a Kickstarter for X100 monochrome.

Or some 3rd sell X100V which already mod.

Both solution will bring very expensive X100 monochrome.

Better lens?

No. X100 10 years history only has 2 different lens design. May be wait until next 10 years.

Better sensor?

More MP may possible. But, I personally dislike Canon M6 Mark II 33MP BSI sensor. Otherwise just buy Canon M6 Mark II + Canon EF-M 22mm F2 which cheaper.

Not possible for stacked sensor except cost above $2500 (X-T3 cost $1500, X100V cost $1400, rumors X-H2 with 40MP stacked sensor cost $2500).

Titanium alloy body?

$1799 Fujifilm X-Pro 3 has titanium top and bottom plates only, not full camera body.

I appreciate any opinion, shared

$849 Fujifilm X-E4 already come with flat body, reduce dials/button and hasn't IBIS to become 'poor man' Leica (flat body).

Are same tragedy (flat body with reduce button) will happen on next X100VI? 😭

Hi, I tried a X100V last weekend as part of Fuji UK's loan scheme (an excellent scheme by the way). So, my experience of the camera is limited to three days of relatively hard use rather than long term ownership.

That said, I see continued incremental evolution of a hugely successful series.  Why change a winning formula? My thoughts:

  • Possible improvements: AF, sensor, DR, ISO performance, etc, inline with other rumoured XH2 and XT5 updates in the next couple of years.
  • Possible new technology: IBIS, which many people would welcome, but so long as it does not increase size, weight or cost too much. My take on IBIS in the X100, coming from using IBIS in my XT4, is that it would be nice to have, but far from essential in such a camera.
  • Very Unlikely changes: Full Frame, not in Fuji's repertoire; it would change the cost base, size and weight. B&W, I think too niche and unlikely to be a commercial success; anyway, may be I am missing something, but why is a pure B&W camera supposedly better that one where one can simply switch to a B&W film simulation (no doubt someone can enlighten me)?  In my opinion, a FF, B&W X100 would not be as commercially successful as continuing with the current format, indeed, it might even become a commercial failure.

As always with responses to such questions, mine can only be nothing more than a combination of a guess about the future and one's opinions about the future direction of travel of a product line, both of which are very speculative.

My only wish is that they somehow implement physical focus ring instead of fly-by-wire and add a real focusing patch in the ovf.

That would make the camera perfect for me.

Autopilot style manual focus ...

czpl wrote:

Em...

  1. Use manual focus lens instead of auto focus lens.
  2. Similar to car's autopilot automatically steer, camera body has motor which will auto rotate above manual focus ring if auto-focus mode on. However, once consumer hand hold "manual focus ring' will auto convert into manual-focus mode. This allow consumer perform more precision manual focus start from current auto-focus point.
  3. Once consumer hand leave "manual focus ring", camera auto switch back to auto-focus mode.
  4. Change AFL button to Focus-Lock button (lock current focus point regardless auto/manual focus). Rotate manual focus ring will release focus lock.

Some thoughts.

There won't be a new lens, Fujifilm just designed a new lens for the X100V which has been very well received everywhere, considering the first four iterations kept the same lens, I think it is very unlikely Fujifilm will already design another one. The only possibility I'm seeing is by changing focal lengths. however the 35mm equiv. seems to be pretty much the sweet spot.

A new sensor is in my opinion very realistic, it is fairly well known they'll introduce a new sensor next year, with the X-H2 most likely be the first camera to sport it, it's only a matter of time until more camera series will see updated models. X100 included. However that sensor won't be FF of course, it's the regular sensor you'll find in any other X-Mount camera.

Along with the new sensor we'll most likely see another processing engine. In addition to that I guess further AF improvements might be possible, maybe a new Film Simulation and further jpg options.

IBIS is something I find very likely. I don't know how difficult it is to integrate an IBIS to a very compact APS-C bpdy, but I think it would be possible. It would also, besides the new sensor, a fairly major reason to upgrade.

Rumours said X-TH will cost $2500 with 40MP s sensor. But, Sony next sensor is 43MP stacked sensor.

https://www.digitalcameraworld.com/news/new-sony-aps-c-sensor-delivers-43mp-and-8k-12-bit-video-if-its-real

However, $2500 too expensive for a fix d lens camera. Only Canon M6 Mark II has 32.5MP BSI sensor, are X100VI will use Canon sensor (but with X-Trans filter)?

Along with the new sensor we'll most likely see another processing engine. In addition to that I guess further AF improvements might be possible, maybe a new Film Simulation and further jpg options.

Since current X100V processor may warm if continues shooting or take video. Most likely faster processor needed in next X100VI.

$999 Ricoh GRIIIx (APS-C with fixed 40mm lens, but smaller & cheaper than X100V) already come with weak 4-stops 3-axis IBIS. So, no technically issue, no cost issue.

I’d like the following in any Fujifilm camera, not just in the X100:

  1. An improvement to the digital teleconverter mode to use cropping rather than upscaling, so that the JPEGs are straight crops and the raw files are either cropped (as per Ricoh’s implementation) or full-sized with the crop applied in metadata (as is the case when, for example, #shooting the X20/30 with a non-native aspect ratio).
  2. Options to set fixed focus at infinity or a configurable distance (again as per Ricoh, who allow any aperture and a variety of snap focus distances as well as full-button snap). Or a simple zone focusing mode, controlled by the ring, like the old Olympus Trip.
  3. The ability to use the joystick directions as four customisable functions when “push to unlock” AF control (or “off”) is selected.
  4. The ability to set ”auto” H/S tone values based on the level of contrast that the camera detects in the scene—which is not the same thing as the DR modes.
  5. The ability to assign “touchscreen on/off” to a function button.
  6. The ability to turn noise reduction completely off, not just reduce it. (Or at least luminance noise reduction—personally I like to retain all luminance noise but still like to get rid of chroma noise.)

Thing is, they’re all just firmware (though zone focusing could benefit from a “ZF” position on the focus mode control).

As for hardware, stabilisation is always handy, as is improved dynamic range.

I would like to see:

-better weather sealing specifically with rubber gaskets around the battery door and port door

-better AF especially AFC and eye AF

-more defined indents between ISO settings on the ISO dial

-lockable exposure compensation dial

-better battery life

-stronger built in flash

-return of the D pad

-full use of the touchscreen for selecting menu items

-ability to select different AF point colors aside from white

I killed my X100V recently at Niagara Falls but it has been the only camera that I have ever truly fallen in love with despite its faults.  I have owned the Panasonic GX7, GM5, Sony A7RII, A7RIII, and A9 and none of them ever filled me with such joy as the Fuji.  Taking it with me on my recent road trip made me instantly realize that I never want to take my Sonys with me for travel ever again.

IBIS

To me even a 3 axis IBIS like the GRIIIx and III have would be welcome. Something to make my shots between 1/20 of a second and 1/80 more likely to be sharp. That's where camera shake gets in the way for me. I'm sure they could do it, but it may take more adjustment of the design than we realize. And perhaps making a good aspc ibis that small is just really hard, and Ricoh is enjoying having put in the work.

Agree. Weak 3-axis IBIS no increase camera body size, but may introduce much shooting possiblity (similar to macro photography).

dual pivoting screen like X-T3?

How about dual pivoting screen like X-T3? If replace rear LCD screen to thinner AMOLED screen, possible no increase camera body size.

A dual pivoting screen would definitely be nice if they could pull it off without making the camera thicker.  I'm not 100% sure I want an OLED screen though because they are still susceptible to burn in.  I definitely would like to see IBIS though which I forgot to add to my list.

“Thinking to give up lovely but big full frame Canon R with 35mm to compact and stylish x100.” That's what will by far and away be the most rewarding feature. Even if you got the first iteration of an X100, as I did many years ago when I rebelled against Nikon's D800, you'll be ahead.

Since all screen (regardless LCD backlight or AMOLED pixel) will degradation over period of time, better solution is make X100 series easy replace via small screw.

It is possible since all screen connector to circuit board are standard. Better make to connector as USB Type-C/Micro-HDMI/Mini-HDMI which can hide behind small notch in camera rear body.

This also allow consumer upgrade to better screen in future.

Many cheap USB hub has HDMI port.

Below is teardown of Fujifilm X-T2 rear LCD panel (dual pivoting screen) connect to body

I would love ❤️ two features to be included in the X100 next. IBIS and the ability to zone focus easily (snap focus). I’m easy to satisfy.

100% agree after read your another thread.

Can't imagine if GoPro didn't also didn't seal battery door via cheap rubber gaskets.
