(WAS) A great Lens

At nearly a thousand dollars one would expect decent dust and moisture sealing. If you have this Lens and its over 5 years old , SELL IT OR TRADE IT IN!
This WAS a amazing lens for the first half of the time I owned it

It's still a current lens.   Compared with the original EF 24-105 f/4 it's cheaper, 25g lighter, but bigger, effectively ⅓ stop slower and ¾ of the zoom range.  It's all of the reasons why I wouldn't buy an f/2.8 APS-C zoom lens.

I didn't think Canon ever made a weatherproofed EF-S lens, but I wouldn't expect any weatherproofing to last five years if there are moving parts involved.  My camera that's supposed to be Waterperry to 40m depth will only stay that way if all the O ringsare changed each year.

i believe it was around 2007 when i played with a friends EF-s 17-55 2.8 lens, the iq was not too bad but the construction compared to a "L" lens was quite poor. besides, there was no "L" coated lenses magic, such as micro contrast, special color saturation and overall quality. the joints had movements and dust could go in. i was turned off by it completely. that was the reason why i never purchased a EF-s or 3rd party lens, with exception of zeiss lenses.

Sorry your lens went bad and Canon rejected the repair attempt. My guess is they decided it was too much work for the price of the item. The good news is, if you're willing to go grey market you can find this lens brand new for about $569.
